English
"Ms. Lee Sujin. You are under arrest on charges of forging private documents and **embezzlement**."
The investigator said this, showing his ID.
> **[Arrest Warrant Execution]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Suspect | Lee Sujin |
> | Charges | Forgery of private documents, use of forged private documents, embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes |
> | Time of Execution | D-Day 10:05 |
> | Witness | Kang Moyeon (questioned separately) |
"Embezzlement? What are you talking about? I haven't even—"
The investigator held out a single sheet of paper.
> **[Transfer Completion Confirmation]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Transfer Executed | 04:17 that day |
> | Amount | 50 billion won |
> | Withdrawal Account | Under Kang Moyeon's name |
> | Recipient | Overseas corporate account |
> | Supporting Documents | Power of attorney, account-opening application, transfer approval form |
Sujin's eyes stopped on that time.
*Four seventeen in the morning.*
That was the exact hour she had been out picking up passports and buying plane tickets.
*Then this eleven o'clock approval—*
It had never even existed as a schedule. Jihoon had finished everything overnight, alone, and left only her and Moyeon to sit here and take the fall.
Three pieces of supporting evidence. Every one of them had come out of Sujin's own hands.
*So that's why he didn't come, that man.*
Her mind raced, but none of that mattered right now.
What mattered was something else.
"Wait, please."
Sujin said, her voice rushed and urgent.
"This person knows nothing. I made the documents, I opened the account, all of it, alone. The Managing Director only signed off."
The investigator paused, his hand still.
"You can say all that during questioning."
"No, I'm telling you now. This person really doesn't know anything—"
Sujin's voice rose.
Getting arrested herself mattered less than keeping Moyeon out of this.
*I'll take all of it. Every bit.*
Her mind ran through the numbers fast.
Every trace led back to her own hands. She had forged the signature herself, made the documents herself, and dug up the passport herself. If she carried it all alone, Moyeon could walk away clean.
*Fifteen years, twenty years, it didn't matter.*
That was the only thing she could do here, right now.
The investigator grabbed Sujin's arm. She **wrenched** it free without thinking.
"Let go! Just let me finish talking!"
In an instant, the lounge fell into **chaos**.
Against three officers, she stood no chance.
Her arm was wrenched behind her back, and her body was forced down to the floor.
Sujin ended up pinned to her knees on the marble floor. Her cheek pressed against the cold stone.
She lifted her head, just enough to find Moyeon.
Moyeon was standing a few steps away.
"Managing Director, please, say something. Tell them you didn't know anything—"
Sujin gasped out the words.
Getting Moyeon clear of this mattered more than her own situation.
Moyeon said nothing at all.
She simply stood there, looking down at Sujin in silence.
*Why won't she say anything?*
Sujin told herself it was shock. Anyone would freeze, watching something like this happen right in front of them.
Still pinned to the floor, Sujin reached her hand out toward Moyeon.
"I'll tell them everything. So please, Managing Director—"
Moyeon walked toward her, slowly.
For a moment, Sujin felt relief.
*Yes, come here.*
It was a hand stretched out from a body pressed to the floor. Ink still clung under her fingernails, left over from handling the passport the night before.
Moyeon stopped in front of her.
And she slowly struck that hand away.
"...Managing Director?"
For the first time, confusion crept into Sujin's voice.
Moyeon turned toward the investigators. Tears were running down her face.
"That person forged my signature and even stole my approval authority. I knew nothing about any of it."
For a moment, the lounge went completely silent.
Sujin's eyes went wide with **disbelief**.
It was the very thing she herself had been desperate to say, only moments before.
That this person knew nothing, that she alone had done it all.
Yet those words were now coming from the mouth of the very person they were meant to protect — aimed, instead, at burying Sujin herself.
Every document she had ever made.
The account-opening application, the power of attorney, the forged passport — all of it, **intact**, had now become the sole evidence of a crime committed by Sujin alone.
*Why.*
Sujin could not understand the reason.
Was Moyeon afraid? Had the chairman ordered it? Or had Moyeon always seen her that way, from the very start?
Whichever it was, there was no time left to ask.
"Ms. Kang Moyeon only needs to come in for questioning as a witness. Ms. Lee Sujin, let's go."
The investigators hauled Sujin to her feet by force. Cold handcuffs closed around her arm, still twisted behind her back.
Her bag hit the floor and rolled.
The zipper sprang open, and everything inside spilled out.
A set of passports. Two plane tickets.
One investigator crouched down and gathered them up.
*Oh.*
Sujin watched, unable to say a single word.
Explaining what those things were now would only make it look like preparations for a getaway.
*The 3:40 flight.*
It was just a number now, meaning nothing at all.
*Last night.*
A scene from the night before flashed through her mind.
The face that had cried, held close in her arms. The voice that had said she was crying because she was happy. The back that had wept without a sound, face buried against her neck.
*So those tears — were they all lies too?*
As she was dragged out, Sujin looked back at Moyeon one last time.
Moyeon no longer looked at her.
She simply stood turned away, cold, wiping away her own falling tears with a fingertip.
Sujin's eyes stopped on that fingertip.
It was a hand without a single callus.
The same hand she had seen on a screen, the day they first met. The same hand that had laced its fingers through hers in the car that morning.
And now, the very hand that had just struck her own away.
