English

The call from Jihoon came on the day the audit notice went up.

"We are moving the day up. Three days from now."

"..."

"Did you hear me?"

"...Yes."

"Once the internal audit starts, every paper gets caught. We finish before that. Hand the report over tomorrow."

The line went dead.

Moyeon stood there for a long time with the receiver still in her hand.

> **[What Moyeon Has to Do]**
>
> | Order | Details |
> |---|---|
> | 1 | Secure copies of the forged papers |
> | 2 | Anonymous report (through a third party) |
> | 3 | Go with her to the lounge on the day |
> | 4 | Give a statement as a witness |

Four lines.

The day she had waited eight months for had been pulled forward to three days away, and Moyeon felt nothing at all.

She should have been glad. The day she got out of this house had come closer.

*Be glad.*

Moyeon ordered it of herself.

Ordering did not make it so.

The next day Moyeon got the envelope ready.

> **[Material Submitted]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Copies of the forged papers | Account-opening application, power of attorney |
> | Records on the money movement | Copy of the approval paper |
> | How it goes in | No name, through a third party |
> | Can it be taken back | No |

She put the copies in and sealed it. On the outside she wrote nothing.

She carried the envelope as far as the front door and stopped there.

Her shoes were on, but her hand would not take the handle.

*It is only paper.*

What she held did not feel like paper.

Moyeon set the envelope down on the sofa.

*What is in there again?*

An account-opening application. A power of attorney. A transfer approval. Every one of them a **forgery**, paper made to look like something it was not.

All of them were made by that person through the night. Moyeon had seen her working late on the second basement floor for days at a time.

*That was her copying my signature.*

It was the same hand.

The hand that copied her signature at night and, by day, opened the meeting-room door to hold out papers in her place.

*Which one is the real one?*

*If it were real she would have told me.*

That sentence came up. She pushed it away.

*There could be something she cannot say.*

That came up too.

*Something like what? Something bigger than my going to prison?*

The strange part was that the two sentences were opposites and hurt exactly the same.

If she did not care, then the whole eight months turned into a lie. What was left was a woman who leaned on the person sent to sell her and called the warmth of it happiness.

If she did care, that was worse. It meant she had copied the signature for eight months while caring.

*So either way she is a bad person.*

Once she had it filed like that, she felt easier for a moment.

And then it fell apart at once.

*And what am I?*

That person had started without knowing who she was selling. Moyeon had known and had picked her anyway. She had looked at the list, put a finger on a line, and done it in three seconds.

When she tried to hate that person, she came up against herself. When she tried to hate herself, she came up against that person.

The two had hold of each other, and she could not let go of either one.

She looked at the clock. An hour had passed.

Moyeon picked the envelope up.

Even after picking it up she did not feel that she had decided.

*Just get out the door first. I can decide about handing it over after that.*

The car pulled away. She looked out the window the whole way. Nothing came into her eyes.

*It is not too late yet.*

She could tell the driver to turn around right now. She could burn the envelope.

Then the one going to prison in three days would be her.

*And that I cannot do.*

Every time that calculation came out, her stomach turned over.

The self that was calculating disgusted her. And still she could not make it stop.

She had lived this way since she was eight. What you lose if you do this, what you gain if you swallow that. Without it she could not have held out one day in this house.

*So here I am doing it again.*

The car stopped.

For a while Moyeon did not get out.

*Get out and hand it over and it ends. Stay in and nothing ends at all.*

Then at some point her body moved first. She opened the door, walked over, and held out her hand.

Only after handing it over did she know that she had handed it over.

*Ah.*

Her hand was empty.

On the way back she had the car stopped.

She walked a few steps and put a hand on a roadside tree.

**Nausea** rose in her, and yet nothing came up.

Her breath came in short breaks. Her fingertips went numb.

Nothing like this had happened since she was eight. Not crying, and only the body going wrong.

*There was nothing else I could do.*

It was a filing she had done countless times in twenty-one years. After it her mind had always come a little easier.

This time it did not work.

However many times she said it over, it did not work.

That evening Moyeon picked up her phone.

*Let us go and see the sea.*

She sent it and turned the screen face down.

*I must be out of my mind.*

She was calling out the person she would send to prison in two days.

*She will say no.*

She hoped for that. She hoped for it with everything in her.

*Where shall we go?*

The answer came back.

Moyeon looked at that one line for a long time.

Her breathing came strangely.

It was a shore with nobody on it. Only the sound of the waves filled the dark.

Moyeon took off her shoes and walked on the sand.

The ground under her feet was cold. It had been a long time since she felt anything like it.

*This too, after so long.*

She could not remember when she had last stepped on anything barefoot. Counting things like that had no end, so at some point she had stopped counting.

"Once you are out, where do you want to go first?"

Sujin asked.

*Once you are out.*

Moyeon caught for a moment on that word.

The one getting out was her. This person was not getting out.

"Anywhere. Anywhere nobody knows me is fine."

She smiled while she said it.

And then she was thrown by it herself.

*Why did I just smile?*

It was not a smile she had made up. Her body knew when to smile and how much, and that one was not that smile.

*I do not know. It does not matter.*

Moyeon pushed the thought away.

Pushing it away took work.

The waves came in and went out.

Moyeon stopped walking and leaned on Sujin's shoulder.

"Thank you. Really."

"Nothing is finished yet."

"Even so."

A hand came to rest on her head.

Moyeon closed her eyes.

*Two days.*

In two days this hand goes into handcuffs.

*If I tell her.*

The thought went past.

If she told her now, this person could run. If she left the same night, then...

When she got that far, Moyeon stopped the thought.

*And then what.*

The name on the account was hers. The signature was hers too. If this person disappeared, all that stayed on the papers was her own name.

*And then I go.*

Moyeon opened her eyes.

The waves were coming in black.

*I cannot do it.*

It was not that she admitted it. The sentence simply came into her head, and Moyeon could do nothing about it.

*I cannot do it because I am afraid.*

That sentence came up too.

The two sentences stood side by side. One of them was an excuse and the other was the truth, and Moyeon could not tell which was which.

*What am I doing right now.*

She had her head against the shoulder of the person she would send to prison in two days. That person's hand was on her hair.

*This is another thing I am not allowed to do.*

And still she did not get up.

*I really am a bitch.*

When that thought came, her eyes went hot.

She must not cry. If she cried this person would ask why, and then she would have to answer.

Moyeon blinked a few times.

"Assistant Manager."

"...Yes."

"Let me ask you one thing."

"What is it."

"Suppose something."

Having started the sentence, Moyeon stopped for a moment.

*What am I about to ask.*

The envelope was already handed over, and there was no way to **retrieve** it, no way to take it back.

And still she wanted to ask something.

"Suppose I had done something bad to you. What would you do?"

Having asked it, her heart beat hard.

*If her face hardens even once here.*

The thought went past. It was not that she meant to do anything if it hardened. The envelope had gone and she had already done it.

And still she wanted it to harden.

Sujin gave a short laugh.

"What are you talking about?"

"Just suppose."

"What would you ever do to me, Managing Director?"

Moyeon heard that answer and held her breath.

*She is laughing.*

The person who had lied to her every day for eight months was laughing.

*Is she really untroubled? Or is that laugh made as well?*

Then something else came up.

*If she really cared, this was where she should have said it.*

She did not say it.

*Then it is not that.*

When she got that far Moyeon closed her eyes.

*Then it is done.*

It was a sentence that should have made her easier. It was a sentence that made what she had done right.

And yet her throat closed.

*She cannot even imagine it.*

She had expected anger. She had expected to be pressed on what she meant by it. But the possibility itself had never come into that head.

Drawing up the papers that would sell her for eight months, she had never once thought that she herself might be sold.

*Is she a fool? Or did she take me for that little?*

*Or else...*

The thought broke off before it reached the third one.

Moyeon put out a hand and took hold of Sujin's collar.

She did not know why she had taken hold of it. The hand had gone first.

The distance between the two of them closed a little more.

And then Sujin stepped back.

*...Why.*

In that moment Moyeon felt something strange.

That it was not a refusal she could tell from the eyes. And still Sujin stepped back.

*What is it that she cannot do?*

"...Let us go in. The night wind is cold."

A jacket came over her shoulders. It was the same jacket she had worn in the records room.

Moyeon slowly let go of the collar she had been holding.

Then she closed her fingertips tight on the sleeve of the jacket.

*Two days.*

It came to her that there would be no chance to give this coat back.

The living room.

Moyeon was sitting on the sofa. She had not even changed her clothes.

In her head the same calculation kept going around.

> **[Where the Report Stands]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Handed in | Last night |
> | How | No name, through a third party |
> | Attached | Copies of the forged papers, the account movement records |
> | Can it be taken back | No |

*There is no way to undo it now.*

However many times she checked it again, the answer was the same. What she had handed over with no name on it, an **anonymous** drop, could not be taken back, and the investigators would already be moving.

And there was one more fact.

*Even if I could undo it, then I am the one who goes to prison.*

Every trace left on the papers had come out of that person's hand, but the name on them was hers. If the table fell, the next in line was herself.

*There was nothing else I could do.*

That was how Moyeon filed it. It was a filing she had done countless times in twenty-one years. After that filing her mind had always come a little easier.

Today it did not come easier.

"...Today, out there, I heard all of it."

Sujin spoke first.

Moyeon's shoulders went hard by a fraction.

"...I see."

*What is she going to say.*

Pity was what came next. Most people who had seen one of those rooms did the same. They looked at her with sorry eyes, and a few days later they forgot.

"How can you sit through a thing like that without saying one word?"

It was not pity. She was angry.

*She is angry, this one.*

The reaction was strange to Moyeon.

"Because saying it changes nothing."

She answered evenly, and still her mouth kept moving.

"The first time I was sent to one of those rooms I was eighteen, and I cried and said I did not want to. Do you know what my father said the next day? 'That is the one thing you can do in this house.' After that I did not cry."

*There I go again, telling this.*

It was the same as in the records room. Words she should not say kept coming out.

A hand took hers.

With no word of comfort, her hand was simply taken.

*If I could run off with this person to somewhere nobody knows us.*

Held in the other woman's arms, Moyeon thought that.

*Get hold of yourself.*

She pushed the thought away at once.

Tomorrow morning this person would be arrested. Because of the material she had handed over. And she herself would sit in the witness chair and give a **statement**, and she would say, on the record, that she had known nothing.

*It is all finished talk already.*

And still these arms were warm. It was a warmth she had never once felt in twenty-nine years.

*Because it is the last time.*

That was how Moyeon gave herself leave.

Tomorrow she would never see this person again. For tonight at least, might she not be allowed to sit here without calculating?

Sujin's hands came carefully around her face. The eyes were asking first.

Moyeon closed her eyes.

*I am sorry.*

It was a word she swallowed inside.

At some point the tears ran down.

"Does it hurt?"

"...No."

"Then why are you crying?"

*Tomorrow morning you go to prison because of me.*

*And I am lying here like this knowing it.*

She could not say it. If she said it this person would run, and then she herself would go to prison.

Moyeon put out a hand and drew Sujin's neck to her. A little longer, a little closer.

"It is nothing. I am just... happy."

*I am crying because I am happy. That part is true as well.*

"Do not cry. Tomorrow it will all be over."

*Yes. Tomorrow it will all be over.*

The cruelest words in the world were handed over in the kindest voice.

Moyeon cried without a sound, her face buried in the back of Sujin's neck.

Before the day broke, she woke at the sense of someone moving.

Moyeon kept her eyes closed and did not move.

She heard Sujin quietly gather her clothes and go out to the living room. Then a low voice on the phone.

"...It is me. One urgent thing. It has to be done by the end of today."

*What is she trying to do.*

Moyeon held her breath.

"I will pay double. No, three times over."

*Three times?*

It was not in the plan. Nothing extra was needed for the table Jihoon had rigged for today. It would not be something Jihoon had asked for either.

Then the sound of a laptop opening, and after that the sound of a keyboard going on for a long time.

Moyeon lay in the dark with her eyes open and looked at the ceiling.

*What is she, that person.*

She could not make sense of it. But there was no way to check it now.

In a few hours it would be the airport.
