English

The basement had no window.

There was no telling whether it was day or night. Moyeon had only one way of measuring time. Twice a day, a food tray came through the narrow gap under the door.

> **[A Record of the Locked Room, Cut into the Wall by Moyeon]**
>
> | Unit | How it is marked |
> |---|---|
> | One day | Two food trays |
> | One month | One line on the wall |
> | Tool | A fingernail, later the handle of a spoon |

In the first year she screamed. She beat on the door, called out the names of people she knew, and begged for her life.

And in between all that, she held a **resentment** against Sujin.

*She should have told me sooner.*

If she had told her sooner, Moyeon would never have handed the report over, and Jihoon would never have been able to rig the table this way.

*All of it is that person's doing.*

If she held on to that sentence she could get through a few hours.

In the second year she started running the numbers.

A way out, a card to bargain with, a weak point of Jihoon's. In her head she rigged the table hundreds of times.

Then she saw that she could use none of it.

When the numbers stopped adding up, something else came up.

*They say she emptied out everything she had to buy two plane tickets.*

The **resentment** did not last long. For Moyeon to go on resenting her, Sujin had to be a bad person, and the two plane tickets kept getting in the way.

*Why would a bad person buy two.*

That year those two sentences kept changing places.

From the third year she did not speak.

She had worn herself out both blaming her and defending her. Neither side ever settled anything, and even if one had, the door would not open.

One thing was left.

*I want to see her.*

There was no reasoning in that sentence. That was why nothing could argue it down.

There was something on the wall besides the lines.

A name of two syllables.

*Sujin.*

She had cut it in for the first time one day in the second year. She scraped at it with a fingernail until it bled, and that day it did not hurt.

Every time it wore away she cut it in again. Later she used the handle of a spoon.

*Why am I doing this.*

Sometimes that thought came.

It was a person she had sent to prison. She had no right to be sorry and no right to miss her.

*So this is the punishment.*

That was how Moyeon settled it.

And having settled it that way, she went on cutting.

Sometimes she saw a **hallucination**, something that was not in the room at all.

The door opening and that person coming in. A person who did not even get angry but only said "Let's go" and put out a hand.

*I must be going mad.*

Moyeon thought that and still did not push it away.

There was no reason to push it away. If she pushed it away nothing at all was left.

By the fourth year, what Moyeon had wanted had gone dim to her as well.

Freedom. For that one word she had run the numbers for eight months and sent one person to prison.

*And what did I get for it.*

A room with no window. Two trays a day. One name cut into a wall.

*Where is that person now.*

She had heard that seven years had come down. It was something Jihoon had let fall in passing.

*Seven years.*

Moyeon chewed on that figure for a long time.

*And I do not even have a figure like that.*

Then a strange thought came.

*Then she gets out before I do.*

What would she do once she was out. Would she look for Moyeon.

*She would. And to do what.*

She would come to take her by the collar, if nothing else. Even that would be good.

When that thought came, a laugh came out of her.

*Wanting to go out and be hit.*

A sound came out that could have been a laugh or a cry.

In the fifth winter, Jihoon came down for the first time in a long while.

"So you are alive."

Moyeon did not answer. She stayed against the wall and did not even lift her head.

"I was thinking it is about time we tidied this up."

*Tidying up.*

Moyeon knew what he meant by it. But she felt nothing at all.

"Oh, and did you know?"

Jihoon was on his way out and turned back.

"That Assistant Manager is coming out soon. Before the full term is up, they tell me."

Moyeon's head came up for the first time.

"...What did you say?"

"I do not know what she did in there, but she has been given **parole**, and they are letting her out before the term is up. Not that it does her any good. What can one ex-convict do."

Jihoon went out smiling. The door closed.

Moyeon sat frozen where she was.

*She is coming out.*

Her head went white, and then something slowly filled it.

It was something that had been dead for five years.

*If she is coming out.*

Would she come. Would she not come.

If she came, what face would she come with. An angry face, or a face that had already forgotten everything.

*I hope she has forgotten.*

That seemed better. It was better for that person to live having forgotten someone like her.

And the moment she thought it, her chest dropped.

*Do not forget me.*

Moyeon pulled her knees in.

She knew it was a shameless thing to want. It was not a thing she had any right to say, after selling that person out.

*Even so.*

She turned her body toward the wall.

She scraped at that place again with a fingernail. It was a groove worn deep by hundreds of scratches.

*I am here.*

In a room with no one to hear it, her heart beat for the first time in five years.

> **[Notice of Coming Release]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Name | Lee Sujin |
> | Time served | Five years |
> | Grounds for release | Parole |
> | Release date | Tomorrow |

A **solitary** cell in the prison, one room with no one else in it.

Sujin sat with her back against the wall.

It had been five years. For the first year she could do nothing. Every night she simply watched the same scene over again. The hand struck away, the back turning from her.

In the second year she met a man.

> **[Inmate Record]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Name | Han Dogyeong |
> | Age | 47 |
> | Offense charged | Breach of trust under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes |
> | Term | Nine years |
> | Former post | CEO of Taesan Capital |

It was in the prison library. While Sujin was going through books on accounting, the man in the next seat said something, as if he were tossing it out.

"That is the edition before the amendment. It is no use to you."

That was how it started.

Han Dogyeong. A man who had been head of a finance arm of the Taesan Group. He was the one who had laid out and run the route the group's **slush fund** took, the money the group kept off its own books. Then someone brought in from outside took his seat, and the breach of trust charge was pinned on him.

"The name of the man who sent me here is Jihoon."

The moment she heard that name, Sujin's hand stopped.

"...I am in here because of that man too."

For a while the two of them looked at each other.

For three years after that day, Sujin learned from Dogyeong. How the capital markets turn, where the money of a large group flows, and where Taesan has left holes over the last twenty years.

Dogyeong poured it all out without holding back. He said there was nothing he could do even if he got out. His name, his licenses, his family, all of it was gone.

"In return I have one thing to ask."

On the day before her release, Dogyeong said that.

"When you are out, do not leave that man sitting where he sits now. That is all."

The voice was even. But Sujin thought she knew what was held down under that evenness.

Sujin looked down at the worn notebook in her hand.

Numbers packed close together. What she had heard from Dogyeong, and what she had pieced together herself. It was five years of gathering.

*Tomorrow I get out.*

Sujin closed her eyes.

Two names came into her head.

*Jihoon.*

*And Kang Moyeon.*

To one of them she owed something back, and of the other she had something to ask.

Sujin opened her eyes. The look in them had turned into something altogether different from what it had been five years earlier.

*This time, I rig the table.*
