The living room table had become an operations room.
By day Sujin met institutional investors at the office. At night she came home and told Moyeon how the people she had seen that day had reacted.
"I met the people from Hanguk Investment today, and the response was **lukewarm**."
"Who is in charge on their side?"
"A Managing Director named Park."
Moyeon thought for a moment.
"That man took on Taesan corporate bonds three years ago and lost money on them. The chairman gave him a public **rebuke** over it."
Sujin's hand stopped.
"You know that sort of thing as well?"
"Because I was in the room when it happened."
Moyeon said it flatly.
"Go again tomorrow and tell him that if the audit item passes, the loss can be looked at again. He is someone who needs a case to point to."
Every night Moyeon drew something in a notebook.

"Director D. This one is wavering."
Moyeon put her finger on the line.
"Why."
"Jihoon has been short of cash lately. When that happens, the first thing a man like him cuts is the **retainer** — the quiet money that had been taking care of people like these."
Sujin raised her head.
"...You are saying the forty-eight billion that went missing reached this far?"
"Of course. He must have been keeping those people in hand with that money."
Moyeon smiled faintly.
"From the moment you took the money, the people under Jihoon have been falling away one by one. They still do not know why."
Sujin turned the pages of the notebook while listening to that explanation.
*This person really had been seeing all of it from the inside.*
**[D-9]**
Taesan Holdings head office, the executive meeting room.
Sujin sat in the meeting as a shareholder. Jihoon sat across from her.
"About item three."
Jihoon said it while turning a page.
"The spending record of the Strategic Planning Division — is that not too wide a range? Trade secrets would be in there as well."
"If any of it is confidential, you only have to **specify** which part is confidential."
Sujin answered evenly.
"Is it strange for a shareholder to ask where the company's money went?"
Jihoon's jaw tightened.
Director D, sitting beside him, was quietly turning pages. Sujin looked at him once.
*So that is the one.*
When the meeting ended and people were filing out, Sujin rode the elevator beside Director D.
"Director."
"...Yes."
"Things must be hard these days."
Director D looked at Sujin.
"I am not sure what you mean."
"When what came down from above stops all at once, people take it hard."
The elevator doors opened. Sujin handed him a business card and stepped out first.
"Director D. How did he react today?"
Moyeon asked.
"He took the card. He did not throw it away."
"Then it is done. He will call within three days."
"How can you be sure."
"That is how he is. He does not come over at once, but once the arithmetic is finished he moves without hesitating."
Sujin made a mark in the notebook.

"What do we do about the minority shareholders?"
Sujin asked.
"That is the biggest piece. Fifteen percent, if they only act as one."
"Getting them to act as one is the hard part."
"Give them a case they can point to and they come together."
Moyeon turned a page of the notebook.
"Taesan's minority shareholders have received almost nothing in dividends for twenty years now. The company made money, and no one knows where the money went."
"And we know where that money went."
"Yes."
Moyeon looked at Sujin.
"Show them that and they will come together on their own."
It was early morning.
When Sujin opened her eyes, the living room light was on.
Moyeon had fallen asleep face down on the table. A pen was still in her hand.
The notebook was covered in dense writing. Twenty years of Taesan's inner workings, who stood with whom, where the money had gone.
*She had been carrying all of this in her head.*
Sujin stood beside her and turned a few pages.
Through five years in that basement, had this person been repeating all of it to herself?
Sujin brought a blanket from the sofa and put it over her shoulders.
Then her hand stopped.
On her arm, which came out from under the blanket, there were old marks like scars. They were scratches left by fingernails.
*She said she carved a name on the wall.*
Sujin looked at that arm for a long time.
Moyeon turned over in her sleep. There was the sound of something muttered.
Sujin bent down and listened.
"...I am sorry."
Sujin froze where she stood.
It was sleep talk. She could guess how many times those words had been repeated over five years.
Sujin pulled the rest of the blanket over her without a word and turned away.
*I have not forgiven you yet.*
She said it to herself.
But she left the living room light on when she went out.

The company dragged it out for three days and then released the register.
There were more than four thousand minority shareholders. Most of them had held their shares for twenty years or more.
Sujin opened an online group and sent mail to the addresses on the register.

The heart of it was a single attached sheet.
A table that set the total dividends paid to minority shareholders over the last five years beside the total money that had gone overseas in the same period.
There was no need to persuade anyone. Two numbers side by side were enough.
Three hundred proxy forms came back in the first week. One thousand two hundred came back in the second.

"This is enough."
Moyeon said it while looking at the **tally**.
"We could collect more."
"No. More than half of four thousand people moved. That is enough for the institutions to look."
Moyeon pointed at one line of the table with her pen.
"Institutions do not move on a case. But when the minority shareholders come together, they move. They do not want to be asked later why they voted against it."
Sujin wrote that down in her notebook.
*This person really is one of our kind.*
