Two days later, nine in the morning.

A notification popped up on Sujin's tablet. An executive meeting chaired by the Chairman — attendance requested.

> **[Meeting Agenda]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Agenda | Final report on the new business investment proposal |
> | Attendees | Kang Moyeon (Managing Director, Strategic Planning Division), Lee Sujin (Assistant Manager, Planning Department) |
> | Location | Chairman's Office, 34th Floor, Main Building |

Sujin was pouring coffee in the break room when voices came from behind her.

"Is the Managing Director really going to get through it this time?"

"How many times has it been now?"

"I don't know. Must be over ten by now."

Sujin's hand stopped over the cup.

*Ten times.*

"But I heard this family's a tough one."

"Then the Chairman will push it through anyway. They need that side's shares one way or another."

The two of them didn't lower their voices even with Sujin standing right there. It meant everyone at the company already knew.

Sujin carried her coffee back to her desk.

*Ten times, and it still isn't over.*

The look she'd seen two days before came back to her. Eyes that waited their turn.

*Ah. So that's what that look was.*

The Planning Department Team Lead hurried over and lowered his voice.

"The Chairman's in a bad mood today. Something about the Managing Director's marriage."

"Marriage?"

"Oh, you didn't know, Assistant Manager. They're about to announce an arranged marriage for the Managing Director. Some family tied to the group's shares, from what I hear."

The Team Lead shrugged as if it were nothing much and walked off.

*That's not a marriage. That's a sale.*

Sujin spat the thought out inside her head.

She had seen people traded like goods in the back alleys too. But there, at least, everyone knew it was wrong. It was done in secret, and getting caught meant real trouble.

Here, they talked about it over coffee in the break room.

The door to the Chairman's office opened.

A wide desk, and behind it, an elderly man. The Chairman of Taesan Group.

Sujin looked at his face for about three seconds.

*Ah. That look.*

It was exactly the same as the back-alley moneylenders — eyes that priced a person instead of seeing a face. The only difference was that they never bothered to hide it, while this one hid it behind a necktie.

*This is worse.*

Moyeon came in first and took her seat.

Back straight, face **unreadable** — nothing like the languid woman Sujin had seen at the penthouse two days before.

Sujin didn't miss the change.

*She swaps her expression out like clothes.*

Even her clothes, her posture, the very pace of her breathing seemed to belong to someone else. But her eyes stayed exactly the same. Empty.

Sujin stood by the wall, tablet in hand, and waited.

That was when she saw someone sitting off to the side, near the door.

It was Jihoon.

Sujin's fingertips froze on the tablet.

*Why is that man here.*

Jihoon sat among the other executives in a suit, **blending** right in. The way he turned his papers, the angle at which he sat — every bit of it belonged to that room.

It was a face nothing like the one that had smirked around a cigarette in the basement.

Jihoon looked up. Their eyes met.

Then, as if nothing had happened, he dropped his gaze back to his papers.

*He told me not to act like we know each other — and he really doesn't. Not even a little.*

Sujin let out a short laugh inside. It was a laugh, and yet a chill ran down her spine.

*So this is the face he lives with, in this place.*

"I've reviewed the proposal."

The Chairman said, turning the pages.

> **[New Business Investment Proposal — Excerpt, Final Report]**

> |---|---|
> | Business Name | Entry into the Southeast Asian logistics platform market |
> | Investment Scale | KRW 32 billion |
> | Review Opinion | Conditional hold (resubmit after change of presenter) |
> | Final Approver | The Chairman |

"The numbers aren't bad. But you won't be presenting it yourself. This isn't a stage for your face to be seen on."

"It's the project I put together."

Moyeon answered, low. There was weight behind her voice.

Sujin was startled, for just a moment, to hear it.

*Oh — she actually pushes back.*

"The proposal goes out under your name. President Nam will give the presentation. All you have to do is stand behind him and smile."

> **[Presentation Format]**
>
> | Item | Original Plan | Chairman's Instruction |
> |---|---|---|
> | Presenter | Managing Director Kang Moyeon | President Nam |
> | Managing Director's Role | Presenting | Sit in only, for photos |

The Chairman's voice was quiet, but it pressed down on the air in the room in an instant.

Moyeon didn't push back any further.

"Yes."

A short answer.

At that moment, Sujin's eyes dropped to Moyeon's hand.

A hand resting on her knee. Her fingers were trembling, faintly. The tendons on the back of her hand showed how hard she was holding herself together.

*She's been like that since the moment she first spoke up.*

She was someone who had to squeeze out that much strength just to push back once.

And that pushback had ended in a single line.

*She built the whole damn thing. And now they're stealing it under her own name. **Absurd**.*

Sujin clenched her jaw. Her face stayed just as blank as ever. But something hot was rising inside her.

*Why am I the one getting angry about this.*

Sujin pushed the feeling down. It wouldn't go down.

"And."

The Chairman set the papers down and went on.

"I've set up the marriage meeting for next month. Don't put it off this time."

Moyeon's expression didn't change.

But Sujin caught something — that blankness was shaking harder than any expression could have. It was the face of someone who had mastered the art of erasing her own face.

"Understood."

Moyeon rose, gave a small bow, and left the room. Sujin followed after her.

On the way out, she glanced toward Jihoon.

He was nodding at the Chairman. A perfectly **courteous** angle.

*That man is smiling like that while he plans to strip the old man of his money.*

The sight stayed with Sujin, strangely, for a long time.

Once they reached the hallway, Moyeon's pace picked up, noticeably. Her face still gave nothing away.

Watching her from behind, Sujin pieced the fragments together in her mind.

What she'd overheard in the break room. What the Team Lead had let slip. The Chairman's tone. The hand she had just seen.

*This woman is a company asset. Not a person — treated as inventory.*

Sujin had seen something like this before, in the back alleys. People with a price tag on them. People handled as if they had been born to be sold.

The only difference was that the stage here wasn't a basement — it was the Chairman's office, thirty-four floors up.

*They really do treat people like inventory.*

At the elevator, Moyeon suddenly stopped walking.

Then, without turning to look at Sujin behind her, she spoke.

"Do I look strange to you?"

"…No."

"Liar."

Moyeon let out a short laugh — closer to a sigh than a laugh.

"I'm the one who's lasted longest in there. Since I was eight years old. Watching the real children's every mood, calculating even my smiles and my tears."

For a moment, Sujin's words caught in her throat.

No comforting words came to mind. Or, to be exact — she had never once tried to comfort anyone. She had never even stood in a place where that was needed.

A few sentences rose in her mind, then were crossed out, one after another.

*Cheer up? Don't make me laugh.*

*It must have been rough? Not that either.*

What finally came out was just something blurted.

"…Your life's twisted up pretty damn bad too, Managing Director."

The moment she said it, she realized what she'd done.

*Am I out of my mind. Talking to my boss like that.*

For the first time, Moyeon's eyes went wide, and she turned to look at Sujin.

Sujin met that gaze head-on. It was the moment to apologize, and yet, strangely, she didn't want to.

Then a faint smile spread at the corner of Moyeon's mouth.

"…That mouth of yours."

"I'm sorry."

"No — it's just been a while."

"Since what."

"Since someone talked to me like that."

Moyeon added, briefly.

"Everyone's careful around me."

The elevator doors opened. Moyeon stepped in first.

Right before the doors closed, she left one more line, low.

"I'm saying this because you seem like someone who can keep her mouth shut, Assistant Manager."

The doors closed. Sujin stood there for a moment.

*Not a **dazzling** princess. A hostage locked away.*

Only then did Sujin begin, dimly, to realize that this table was more complicated than she had first thought.

And the hand she'd seen back in the meeting room rose in her mind again.

Fingers that had trembled. Tendons standing out on the back of a hand.

*If only someone had just laid a hand over that hand.*

Sujin shook her head, unable to say where that thought had come from.

*What am I doing.*

She pressed the elevator button harder than she needed to.
