English
Autumn had gone deep.
Because of the forgery job Jihoon had handed her, Sujin was combing through every equity stake and asset record held in Moyeon's name.
Late nights at the office had taken care of the original signature, more or less. What was left now was the personal information. If even one item on the account opening application was wrong, the bank sent it back.
> **[Items to Confirm]**
>
> | Item | Status |
> |---|---|
> | Date of birth | Confirmed |
> | Resident registration number | Confirmed |
> | Previous address history | Not confirmed |
> | Family relations | Not confirmed |
The last two items were the problem.
Sujin opened the document **index**. It was the list of every paper Taesan Holdings had kept for twenty years.
Then her hand stopped at one entry she did not know.
> **[Document Index — Excerpt]**
>
> | No. | Document | Storage Location | Registered |
> |---|---|---|---|
> | A-1140 | Kang Moyeon asset records file | Planning Department cabinet | 3 years ago |
> | A-1141 | Kang Moyeon personnel record | HR team | 5 years ago |
> | **B-0083** | **Family relations and adoption documents** | **Underground records room** | **21 years ago** |
*Twenty-one years ago.*
Sujin looked at that line for a long time.
Moyeon had come into this house at eight years old — that was what Sujin had been told. That put it right at that point.
*So something like this is still here.*
For the work, it was material she needed. Adoption papers would carry the previous address and the family relations, all of them.
But Sujin was **reluctant** to put that line on a viewing request, and she hesitated for a long time.
*Am I allowed to see this?*
It was a strange thing. Here was a woman who copied other people's signatures and felt nothing at all.
That evening, Sujin went in for a sign-off.
She handed the documents over and was about to leave, but she stopped at the door.
*Should I say it?*
Saying nothing would have ended it. File the viewing request quietly, pull out the information she needed, and be done.
*But that feels wrong.*
In the end, Sujin turned around.
"So, I was looking at the index today."
"Yes?"
"There is a document from twenty-one years ago. About your adoption, Managing Director."
Moyeon's face went stiff in an instant.
The cup in her hand touched the table with a sound that came out far too loud.
"…Where did you say that is."
Her voice carried something that was not usually in it, something close to desperation.
*Oh. That much of a reaction.*
"The underground records room. They say it is the original storage section."
"I have never seen it either."
Moyeon said it shortly.
"Not once?"
"No."
Sujin had nothing to say for a moment.
A woman who had not seen her own papers in twenty-one years. Sujin started to work out what that meant, then decided not to.

> | Entry | Badge tag, then the keeper comes along |
> | Photographing or removal | Approval required in advance |
> | In charge | General Affairs team |
Sujin checked the rules and frowned.
*So the keeper has to come along.*
Going in during the day left a record, and a report went up to the General Affairs team. Word that the Managing Director had looked up her own adoption papers would reach the Chairman in less than a day.
"Let's go after work."
Sujin said.
"Once the keeper has gone home, I will do something about the door."
"…Do what?"
"You are better off not asking that."
Moyeon looked at Sujin for a moment.
Then she nodded.
"Let's do that, then."
Eight at night. The keeper had gone home.
The corridor on basement level two was **dim**. Only half the lights were on, and their footsteps rang out far too loud.
Sujin opened the cover of the panel beside the door.
*This much I can do.*
It was an old electronic lock. She worked at it for about ten minutes, and the lock opened. It left no **trace** on the employee badge record.
Moyeon was watching Sujin's fingertips.
"…Assistant Manager."
"Yes."
"Where do you learn something like this."
Sujin's hand stopped for a second.
"Before I came to the Planning Department."
That was the whole answer. Moyeon did not ask any further.
The original storage section had no light switch of its own.
"Why will the lights not come on?"
Sujin pressed the switch a few times, and nothing happened.
"You have a phone."
Moyeon held out her phone with the flashlight on. Sujin took it and ran the light over the box labels one by one.
A narrow passage, a low ceiling. The two of them ended up crouching down shoulder to shoulder. They had to light one box with one flashlight, so there was no way to keep any distance.
Their shoulders touched.
Sujin noticed it, and still she did not move.
*Digging for one thing in a hole this tight.*
She grumbled inside, and still the closeness did not bother her.
"B-0083."
Sujin read the label.
"I think it is here."
She pulled out one old box. Dust went up in a cloud. Both of them coughed for a moment.
A document file came out of the box.
On the cover, Moyeon's name and a former name Sujin did not know stood side by side.
Moyeon's hand stopped on that cover. For a long time she could not turn the cover.
Her fingertips were shaking.
*She is shaking.*
Sujin held the light and watched that hand.
She could have reached over and turned the cover for her. But that did not seem right.
"May I open it?"
Sujin asked carefully. Moyeon gave a short nod.
Inside were the adoption confirmation notice and one faded photograph tucked between its pages. In it a child Sujin did not know stood awkwardly among adults in suits.
> **[Adoption Confirmation Notice — Excerpt]**
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Child's name | (former name) |
> | Age | 8 |
> | Reason for adoption | Parent unable to provide care |
> | Date confirmed | March, 21 years ago |
Sujin's eyes stopped on the line that said "Parent unable to provide care."
*So that is all a life is. One line.*
"This is me. When I first came here."
Moyeon said it low.
"I still remember letting go of my mother's hand. In front of the car, she kept telling me not to look back. But I kept looking back. I could see that she was crying."
Sujin's fingertips went a little stiff.
"And after that, from the moment I stepped through the gate of this house, nobody held me. Only when there were photographs. Then they told me to smile."
*Ah.*
Three seconds came into Sujin's head.
The face at the presentation that smiled for exactly three seconds, in time with the shutter.
*So that is where it started.*
Moyeon stopped for a moment, then went on.
"After I became an adult, I looked for my mother in secret. It took a lot of asking around."
"…Did you meet her?"
"No."
Moyeon shook her head.
"She had already died a few years before. Cancer, they said. Without me knowing. Without me there."
There was no crying in her voice, and no blame. What was left was only a kind of sadness that had dried out long ago.
"I could not even go to the funeral. Back then I did not even know there was such a thing."
Sujin did not know what she was supposed to say. Instead she said it quietly to herself.
*Could there be a goodbye later than this one, anywhere in the world?*
Moyeon did not move, the photograph still in her hand.
Sujin held the light steady on that photograph and looked at the side of Moyeon's face.
Moyeon did not cry. Her eyes did not even fill.
*That is something she learned too.*
It was the face of someone who had forgotten how to cry.
Sujin slowly reached out with the hand that was not holding the light.
And she laid it gently on Moyeon's shoulder.
*Ah, shit.*
The hand went first. The thought came after.
On the day they first met, she had seen their two hands resting on the same screen, and she had pulled her hand off the screen.
This time it reached out instead.
*I should take it off.*
She did not take it off.
Moyeon did not push the hand away either.
Inside the dark **archive**, only the sound of their breathing mixed, close together.
"…This is the first time I have heard anything like this."
Sujin said it low.
"There has been nobody to tell, all this time."
"There is now."
It came out without thinking.
At that moment, Moyeon lifted her head and looked straight at Sujin.
In the dark, their eyes met from very close. Inside the narrow circle the flashlight made, it felt as if only the two of them existed.
Sujin looked into those eyes.
They were not the empty eyes she had seen on the day they first met. Something had filled them. She could not tell what it was, but they were not empty.
*Those eyes. I like them.*
The moment that thought came, Sujin flinched at herself.
*I like them?*
Moyeon looked away first. But she did not push the hand off her shoulder.
"…Thank you."
It was a small voice. Instead of answering, Sujin pressed a little harder on the shoulder she held.
The document file went back into the box.
Sujin did not write down the information she needed.
The previous address, the family relations, all of it was in that file. Take out a notebook, copy it over, and it would be done in three minutes.
*I can come back tomorrow.*
That was how Sujin put it off.
She put it off knowing there would be no coming back.
