컨퍼런스 첫날, 은호는 정신없이 하루를 보냈다.

명함을 스무 장쯤 받았고, 이름을 절반도 못 외웠다. 세미나 세 개를 들었고, 두 개는 절반쯤 이해했다.

저녁 환영회에서 태경이 은호를 데리고 다니며 사람들을 소개했다.

"이쪽은 강은호 사원입니다. 5월부터 실무를 맡습니다."

*5월부터.*

그 말이 나올 때마다 은호는 조금씩 이상한 기분이 들었다. 자기가 뭘 맡는지는 알고 있었는데, 그게 곧 태경이 없다는 뜻이라는 걸 매번 새로 깨닫는 것 같았다.

환영회가 끝나고 두 사람은 호텔까지 걸었다.

바다가 가까워서 짠 냄새가 났다.

"내일 심포지엄 대리님 자리로 되어 있던데요." 은호가 말했다. "사무국에서 확인 메일 왔어요. 제 이름으로 바뀌었다고."

"…네."

"왜 바꾸셨어요?"

"거기 오는 사람들이 내년에 은호 씨 파트너 될 사람들이에요."

"대리님도 만나셔야죠."

"저는 다른 데서 만나요."

은호가 걸음을 멈췄다.

"대리님."

"네."

"자꾸 이러시면 저 착각해요."

태경이 은호를 봤다. 가로등 밑이었다.

한참 뒤에 짧게 답했다.

"…착각 아니에요."

그러곤 먼저 걸었다.

On the first day of the conference, Eunho spent the day in a blur.

He collected some twenty business cards and remembered fewer than half the names. He attended three seminars and understood about half of two.

At the evening reception, Taekyung took him around and introduced him.

"This is Eunho Kang. He takes over operations from May."

*From May.*

Each time those words came out, Eunho felt something odd. He knew what he was taking over. But it was as if he kept newly realizing that it also meant Taekyung would be gone.

After the reception, they walked back to the hotel.

The sea was close enough that the air smelled of salt.

"Tomorrow's symposium was booked under your name," Eunho said. "The secretariat emailed me. It's been changed to mine."

"…Yes."

"Why did you change it?"

"The people there are the ones who'll be your partners next year."

"You should meet them too."

"I'll meet them elsewhere."

Eunho stopped walking.

"Taekyung."

"Yes?"

"If you keep doing this, I'm going to misunderstand something."

Taekyung looked at him. They were under a streetlight.

After a long moment he answered briefly.

"…It wouldn't be a misunderstanding."

And he walked on ahead.
