70화 첫 주

첫 주는 정신이 없었다.

관공서 등록, 은행 계좌, 통신사. 안내문에 적힌 대로 하나씩 해나갔는데, 실제로는 안내문에 없는 일이 더 많았다.

목요일 아침, 은호가 처음으로 지사 사무실에 출근했다.

작았다. 서울 사무실의 3분의 1쯤. 자리가 여덟 개였고, 그중 넷이 비어 있었다.

"여기가 은호 씨 자리예요."

태경이 창가 자리를 가리켰다.

"제일 좋은 자리 아니에요?"

"…네."

"대리님은요?"

태경이 문 쪽 자리를 가리켰다. 창문에서 제일 먼 자리였다.

은호가 뭐라 말하려는데, 현지 직원 한 명이 다가왔다.

"You must be Eunho. I'm Minjae — well, everyone calls me MJ."

한국계 3세라고 했다. 여기서 나고 자랐고, 한국어는 조금 한다고.

"He talks about you a lot," MJ가 웃으며 말했다. "Well, 'a lot' for him."

은호가 태경 쪽을 봤다.

태경은 이미 자기 자리로 돌아가 화면을 보고 있었다. 귀가 조금 빨간 것 같기도 했다.

The first week was a blur.

Government registration, a bank account, a phone plan. He worked through the list as written, though in practice there was more that was not on the list than was.

On Thursday morning, Eunho came into the branch office for the first time.

It was small. About a third of the Seoul office. Eight desks, four of them empty.

"This one is yours."

Taekyung pointed to the desk by the window.

"Isn't this the best seat?"

"…It is."

"And yours?"

Taekyung pointed to the desk by the door. The one farthest from the window.

Eunho was about to say something when a local staff member came over.

"You must be Eunho. I'm Minjae — well, everyone calls me MJ."

Third-generation Korean, he said. Born and raised here, and he spoke some Korean.

"He talks about you a lot," MJ said, smiling. "Well, 'a lot' for him."

Eunho looked over at Taekyung.

He had already gone back to his desk and was looking at his screen. His ears might have been slightly red.
