점검이 끝나고 하윤이 떠나던 날, 태경이 공항까지 배웅을 나갔다.

은호는 사무실에 남았다. 그게 맞다고 생각했다.

두 시간쯤 뒤에 태경이 돌아왔다. 자리에 앉더니 한참 화면만 봤다.

"…물어봤어요." 태경이 말했다.

은호가 고개를 들었다.

"뭘요."

"3년 전에 왜 지원했는지."

은호는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

"둘 중 하나는 지원해야 그 자리가 부서에 남는다고," 태경이 말했다. "제가 안 할 걸 알았대요."

"…"

"7년 동안 물어볼 수 있었는데 안 물어봤어요."

태경이 화면에서 눈을 뗐다.

"왜 안 물어봤는지 아세요?"

"…모르겠어요."

"답을 들으면 제가 뭔가 해야 될 것 같아서요." 태경이 담담하게 말했다. "안 물어보면 아무것도 안 해도 되니까."

은호가 태경을 봤다.

"근데 지금은 물어보셨네요."

"네."

"왜요?"

태경이 잠깐 은호를 봤다.

"이제 뭔가 해도 되니까요."

On the day the review ended and Hayoon left, Taekyung went to the airport to see her off.

Eunho stayed at the office. He thought that was right.

Taekyung came back about two hours later. He sat down and looked at his screen for a long time.

"…I asked her," he said.

Eunho looked up.

"Asked what."

"Why she applied three years ago."

Eunho said nothing.

"One of the two had to apply or the position would leave the department," Taekyung said. "She knew I wouldn't."

"…"

"I could have asked for seven years. I didn't."

He looked away from the screen.

"Do you know why I didn't?"

"…No."

"Because if I heard the answer, I'd have to do something about it." He said it evenly. "If I didn't ask, I didn't have to do anything."

Eunho looked at him.

"But you asked this time."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Taekyung looked at him for a moment.

"Because now I'm allowed to do something."
