Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

Kate

For a few days, the factory was quiet.

A big order had just been finished, and the **fabric** for the next order had not arrived yet.

The workers, who on a normal evening would have gone back to the sewing lines after dinner, returned to the dormitory at six o'clock.

In her heart, Kate was glad.

She felt that way especially whenever she saw the young workers.

It was nice for them to finish early, even for a few days.

They could sleep as much as they wanted, and rest, too.

That much, she thought, was only natural.

It was the afternoon of the third day.

When Kate came out of the production office, there were a few young female workers gathered around the line leader.

Thinking something had gone wrong, she went over to them.

Xiaolan, who was seventeen, asked.

"No **overtime** again today?"

The line leader said.

"No. The fabric hasn't come yet."

Xiaolan's face quickly grew dark.

"What about tomorrow?"

"I don't know about tomorrow, either."

Kate cut in with a smile.

"Why do you want to work overtime so much? Isn't it nice to finish early?"

Xiaolan looked at Kate.

"No, it isn't."

Kate stopped smiling.

"Why?"

Xiaolan answered as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"You get paid less."

Only then did Kate ask about something she had never really thought about.

"Do you get paid a lot more when you work overtime?"

"Of course."

Xiaolan said.

"I didn't come all this way just to get base pay."

Xiaolan's hometown was a small city that took hours to reach by train.

Instead of staying in school, she had come to the factory.

She lived in the dormitory.

Whenever she got paid, she sent part of the money home and spent the rest on herself.

Kate asked.

"Still, if you finish early, you can have fun with your friends."

Xiaolan laughed.

"Where?"

"You could go out."

"If you go out, you spend money."

Kate went quiet.

Xiaolan said.

"I came here to **earn** money."

Another worker, who had been standing next to them, spoke up.

"I **prefer** leaving early, though."

Xiaolan jumped in right away.

"This one wants to go home every day."

"That's because I'm tired."

The other worker rolled her **wrist**.

"It hurt here yesterday, too."

Xiaolan said.

"I have to send money home next month."

"Then you can do my overtime, too."

The two of them laughed.

Kate laughed along with them.

The thought that had been in her head until a moment before lost its shape.

Kate had always felt sorry for the young workers whenever she saw them working late into the night.

It was not as if that feeling now seemed wrong.

But the young workers did not all want the same thing, either.

One of them was waiting to finish early.

The other was waiting for overtime to start again.

A few days later, the fabric arrived.

The line leader said.

"Starting today, there's overtime again."

Xiaolan smiled.

The worker next to her let out a sigh.

"Until what time?"

"Until nine today."

"Ah..."

Xiaolan said from beside her.

"I like it."

"You're the only one who likes it."

The two of them laughed again.

Kate was watching them.

Overtime was hard.

But overtime pay was money, too.

For someone who had come all the way to a factory instead of school to earn money, those hours meant something different from what Kate had thought.

That did not suddenly make working long hours a good thing.

Two things were simply true at the same time.

That evening, a little after six, Kate stepped out of the factory.

A few days earlier, she would have watched the workers leaving work early and felt glad.

Today, she could not say that so easily.

Xiaolan came running up from behind.

"Kate!"

"What is it?"

"There will be overtime tomorrow, too, right?"

In the past, Kate thought, she would have answered right away.

*It's better if there isn't any.*

But this time, she only asked a question.

"What are you going to do with the money you earn from overtime?"

Xiaolan said.

"This month, I'm planning to send a little more home."

Kate nodded.

Perhaps understanding someone did not mean deciding, in their place, what was good for them.
