English
The fluorescent light flickered, pale blue.
A basement unit in an old low-rise apartment building. A room without a single window.
Cigarette smoke filled the room with a gray haze. The wallpaper had yellowed and lifted with damp. In the corner, instant noodle cups were stacked into a tower.
In the middle of it all, two monitors gave off a white glow. That light alone seemed like the only living thing in the room.
Sujin sat buried in that light.
A torn leather jacket. Hair matted from days left unwashed.
But her fingers never wavered. They ran across the keyboard with precision.
On the left monitor sat a shell company's logo and its articles of incorporation. On the right, forged financial statements were being laid out.

A single font. A single placement for the stamp.
Once it passed through Sujin's hands, a company that had never existed was born — as sound as if it had been turning a profit for ten years straight.
"…Done."
Sujin murmured, low. She clicked the mouse, and the document dropped into its final form.
Laundering loan sharks' money. Building ghost companies on gangsters' behalf. Dirty work, and dangerous. But no document that had passed through Sujin's hands had ever cracked.
In the back alleys, Sujin went by another name.
**The Table-Rigging Bitch.**
A woman who rigged companies that existed nowhere into being, right there on the table. A woman who, before one table fell, was already rigging the next.
She let out a long stream of smoke and leaned back in her chair. Today's share of the work was done. All that was left was to wait until this document sold.
But that ease did not last long.
Click.
The doorknob turned. A door that should have been locked opened without a sound, far too smoothly.
Sujin's eyes went still in an instant. Not a familiar footstep. Not a familiar smell.
Her hand moved first, toward the collapsible baton hidden under the desk.
But the ones who walked in were strangers.
Three men in black suits. And behind them, a man walked in with a stride that did not belong in this **cramped** room at all.
It was Jihoon.
"If this is breaking and entering, I'm calling the police."
Sujin turned her chair halfway around. She tapped ash into the ashtray. Her voice carried more scorn than caution.
Jihoon did not answer. Instead, he scanned the room slowly, then let his eyes settle on the monitor.
It was the document she had just finished. The corner of Jihoon's mouth lifted slightly.
"You put this together alone?"
"You already know. Why ask."
Jihoon tapped the monitor lightly with a fingertip. Billions in fake capital sat beneath it, **unshaken**.
"Miss Lee Sujin."
The moment he said her name, Sujin's eyes hardened.
No one who had come to this basement knew her real name, let alone her surname. Everyone who called on Sujin used the nickname instead.
"I've heard the name they use for you in that world too. The Table-Rigging Bitch."
Jihoon huffed out a laugh.
"As of today, drop that name."
"…"
"Isn't it too much of a waste for Korean capitalism, letting talent like you rot in this basement."
Jihoon pulled an envelope from his inside pocket and tossed it onto the desk. It was thick.
Before she could even guess the amount, his next words changed the air in the room.
"Assistant Manager, Planning Department, Taesan Group. That's your name starting today."
Sujin let out a short laugh, half mockery and half caution.
"Are you joking. A conglomerate is going to take in some bottom-feeder bitch like me? Don't tell me you don't know one background check ends this in three seconds."
"Background."
Jihoon repeated the word and laughed. For the first time, it was a laugh of real amusement.
"That, I'll make. Same as how you made this ghost company."
Sujin finished her cigarette and looked up at him. The man in front of her was cut from a different cloth than the small-time crooks of the back alleys.
His suit, his manner, the way he pressured people — all of it spoke a different grammar entirely.
"What do you want done."
"Forged documents. Exactly what you've always done. Only the scale gets bigger."
Jihoon leaned down to meet her eyes.
"Fifty billion won. A **slush fund** under the chairman's adopted daughter's name. Draft the documents to move it overseas. Perfectly. Five billion of that is yours."
"And the daughter. Is she only lending her name."
Sujin asked. Jihoon huffed a laugh.
"She's set to leave the country the same day it happens. You'll need to forge a passport too. Under a different name, of course."
"And after that."
"Once she's out, it gets handled there. Quietly."
His tone was far too light. Sujin did not ask what exactly "handled" meant. She felt she already knew, without asking. That lightness bothered her in a way she could not quite place, but she pressed no further. It was not her business.
Silence settled over the room. The fluorescent light flickered once more.
> **[Proposed Terms]**

Numbers turned over in Sujin's head.
Five billion won. Money she would never so much as glimpse even if she forged documents in this basement for the rest of her life.
And to touch that money, what she would be given was an identity that had never existed — Assistant Manager, Planning Department, at a conglomerate.
"And if I refuse."
"If you refuse, the moment you walk out of this room, you're just a **forger**. Everything you've hidden until now will come out into the world, one piece at a time."
It was a threat. But there was no urgency in it. If anything, it sounded closer to certainty.
Sujin ground out the rest of her cigarette.
"…And the contract."
The corner of Jihoon's mouth lifted all the way.
"As expected. You're quick."
He took a thin file from his briefcase and set it on the desk. A copy of an employee ID was clipped to the cover.
> **[Copy of Employee ID]**
>
> | Name | Lee Sujin |
> |---|---|
> | Department | Planning Department, Taesan Group |
> | Position | Assistant Manager |
> | Employee No. | (to be issued) |
The face in the photo was identical to the Sujin sitting in this basement right now. Only the background was different.
In place of the dark of the back alleys, a face groomed neat under the white light of a studio.
Sujin stared down at the photo for a long moment. It felt like looking at a ghost in a mirror.
"Tomorrow morning, nine o'clock. The main entrance of Taesan Group headquarters."
"And what are you, there."
"Head of the Strategic Planning Division."
Jihoon answered **curtly**.
"Brought in from outside last year. If we cross paths at the office, don't act like you know me."
Jihoon straightened up and smoothed down his clothes.
"Don't be late. First impressions matter."
He left the room without a backward glance. One of the men set down two clothing boxes by the door on his way out. The rest followed after him and disappeared.
The heavy door shut again. Only the hum of the fluorescent light and the sound of Sujin's breathing remained in the room.
Sujin pressed her fingertips down on the copy of the ID and stayed still for a long time.
*Lee Sujin, Assistant Manager, Planning Department, Taesan Group.*
A name that had never existed.
How far that name would carry her — this Sujin, in this moment, did not yet know.
