English

Taesan Group Headquarters.

The fifty-story glass tower stood there, throwing back the morning sun.

Sujin stopped for a moment in front of it. The suit Jihoon had given her the night before fit perfectly. Her shoes shone with an unfamiliar polish.

The hand that, just yesterday, had been smoking a cigarette in a basement room now held a crisp employee badge.

> **[Employee Badge]**
>
> | Name | Lee Sujin |
> |---|---|
> | Department | Planning Department |
> | Position | Assistant Manager |
> | Employee No. | TS-2024-1103 |

She ran a fingertip over the employee number stamped beneath her name.

It was not a forgery. It was real, and that made it stranger still.

The air changed the moment she pushed through the revolving door.

The lobby was vast and quiet. The marble floor swallowed even the sound of footsteps. Beyond the glass wall that ran up to the ceiling, downtown Seoul spread out.

A faint fragrance wrapped around the whole lobby. A nose used to the smell of cigarettes from the back alleys **flinched**, without meaning to, at the unfamiliar scent.

*Even the smell is different here.*

Sujin murmured it to herself and walked toward the front desk.

"The Planning Department is on the fifteenth floor. Have a good day, Assistant Manager."

*Assistant Manager.*

It was an unfamiliar title. In the back alleys, no one had ever addressed Sujin that way.

*Bitch*, *broad*, or that nickname — that was all there had ever been.

The elevator wall **gleamed** like a mirror. A woman in a suit was reflected in it.

It was the same face as the woman who, just last night, had been running InDesign in a basement. And yet she looked like a completely different person.

*Not bad, for a costume.*

Sujin thought that and let the corner of her mouth lift, just slightly.

The doors opened on the fifteenth floor.

An open space without partitions. Meeting rooms divided by glass walls. Potted plants scattered here and there.

People spoke in low voices as they scrolled through their tablets. Printers spat out documents without a sound.

If the back-alley office had run on noise, this place ran on silence.

*Everything here is so quiet.*

Sujin repeated it silently to herself. For now, it was nothing more, and nothing less, than that.

"You must be Assistant Manager Lee Sujin."

She turned at the unfamiliar voice, and a man in a neat suit approached. His nametag read 'Planning Department Team Lead.'

"You'll be part of our team starting today. Your desk is this way."

Sujin sat down at the desk she was shown to.

A wide monitor. A keyboard set neatly in place. A brand-new business card without a single fingerprint on it.

> **[Business Card]**
>
> | | |
> |---|---|
> | Name | Lee Sujin |
> | Title | Assistant Manager, Planning Department |
> | Company | Taesan Group |
> | Contact | (extension to be assigned) |

She picked up the card between her fingertips.

This one thin sheet of paper felt stranger than any document she had ever forged in the back alleys.

The team lead went on introducing the surrounding desks one by one — the seat beside her, the seat across from her, and where the meeting rooms were.

Sujin nodded and took it all in, one detail at a time. The names slipped from her mind quickly, but the layout of the desks and the paths between them stayed **etched** precisely in her mind. It was a habit her body had picked up in the back alleys.

The team lead handed her a tablet.

"This is your first assignment today. It's a draft of the new-business investment proposal — the design's a bit urgent. I heard you know your way around InDesign."

"…Yes."

> **[New Business Investment Proposal — Draft Excerpt]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Business Name | Southeast Asia Logistics Platform Expansion |
> | Investment Scale | KRW 32 billion |
> | Target Markets | Vietnam, Indonesia |
> | Expected Payback Period | 4 years |
> | Prepared By | New Business Team, Planning Department |

Sujin answered and laughed quietly to herself. The hands that had once built ghost companies in the back alleys were no different from the hands touching this proposal now.

The tools were the same. The skill in her fingertips was the same.

If there was one difference, it was only this — here, that skill wore a label that read 'legal.'

> **[Today's Tasks]**
>
> | Order | Details |
> |---|---|
> | 1 | Design the new business investment proposal |
> | 2 | Get sign-off on documents at the Chairman's residence (afternoon) |

Sujin took the tablet and sat down at her desk. Her fingertips did not waver as she turned on the monitor.

Still, the Seoul skyline spreading beyond the window stood in too **stark** a contrast to the windowless basement room she had known. That unfamiliar view lingered deep in her eyes for a long time.

Sujin scrolled through the tablet screen, skimming the draft proposal. The writing was stiff, but the layout was **sloppy**. Every spot that needed fixing caught her eye at once.

*I could do this with my eyes closed.*

The moment she set her hands on the keyboard, the team lead dropped a remark in passing.

"Oh, and Assistant Manager — this afternoon you'll need to bring some documents to the Chairman's residence. There's a sign-off to get from his adopted daughter."

*His adopted daughter.*

The one Jihoon had mentioned. The owner of the fifty billion won. The center of this table.

Sujin tightened her grip on the tablet and nodded.

"…Understood."

It was the moment the existence of that woman, whose face she had never even seen, first entered Sujin's field of view.
