English

D-1, morning.

An alert popped up on Sujin's tablet, out of nowhere.

> **[Work Request]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Title | Request to Stand In for the Managing Director Today |
> | Reason | Aide Out — Sudden Acute Gastroenteritis |
> | Schedule | Marriage meeting (11:00, hotel in Cheongdam-dong) |
> | Request | Document and protocol support |

"Assistant Manager, I'm sorry to ask, but could you go with the Managing Director today? Her aide can't make it in, all of a sudden."

The Team Lead asked, looking apologetic.

*Why today, of all days.*

Sujin let out a short sigh.

Tomorrow was the day. There was still paperwork she had to finish before then. And of all things, it had to be that meeting — that marriage meeting.

*And she had no excuse to say no.*

Sujin picked up her tablet.

A private room at the hotel.

Moyeon had been perfectly put together since the morning — her hair pinned up neatly, her suit without a single wrinkle.

Sujin watched her **profile** from inside the car.

*She's swapped her expression out again.*

It was the same face Sujin had seen in the Chairman's office — a face with nothing inside it.

*She wasn't like this, at the beach yesterday.*

"Are you nervous?"

Sujin asked, without thinking.

Moyeon looked out the window for a moment before answering.

"The seventeenth time, maybe. Or the eighteenth."

"…What?"

"Meetings like this."

Moyeon let out a short laugh.

"I lost count somewhere along the way."

Sujin couldn't bring herself to ask anything more.

They reached the hotel.

"Wait outside."

Moyeon said, briefly, at the door.

"Yes."

Sujin stayed in the hallway. The thick door swung shut. But it didn't close all the way.

Through the narrow gap, every sound from inside leaked out, whole.

*The door didn't close.*

Sujin reached out to shut it for her, then stopped.

*…No, wait.*

If she closed it, she wouldn't hear what was being said inside.

Sujin pulled her hand back and leaned against the wall.

At first, it was just ordinary small talk.

The weather. Work. How everyone had been.

But about ten minutes in, the tone of the voices changed.

"To be honest, there's something on our side that leaves us a little disappointed."

It was the other man's voice. He sounded fairly old — the one this second marriage was for.

"I heard she's an adopted daughter. Then how does the share **inheritance** work? If she's a daughter in name only, we don't gain anything, do we?"

"It's already been arranged. Some of the shares will transfer to her after the marriage."

The Chairman's voice answered, flat and even — like a man settling the terms of a real estate deal.

*Nothing to gain, he says.*

Sujin's hand curled into a fist on its own.

"Her face isn't bad, I'll **grant** that."

The man laughed.

"She's a little old, isn't she? Can she still have children?"

*What did he just say?*

"You don't need to worry about that. We have her medical records ready. I can send them over, if you'd like."

This time it was Moyeon's brother — the Chairman's own son. His voice was light, like he was talking about a stranger.

"She's never talked much. She's been like that since she was little. Whatever you tell her to do, she does it well enough."

It was the kind of thing a family says to introduce someone. But nowhere in it was there any of the warmth you'd expect, introducing a person.

"And she's not the difficult type, either. She's never once given us trouble that way."

A short laugh drifted out from inside the room. It came from more than one person.

Not once, in all of it, did Sujin hear Moyeon's voice.

Sujin stood with her back against the hallway wall.

Her fingertips were shaking.

*Whatever you tell her to do, she does it well.*

Sujin had heard every kind of filthy talk, back in the alleys. Treating a person like an object, pricing a woman like merchandise — none of that was new to her.

But this was different.

None of it was cursing. None of it was abuse. If anything, it sounded like praise — gentle, no trouble, never once caused any **grief**. The kind of thing a family might say, introducing a daughter.

Except there was no person in any of it.

What she liked. What she was like. What she wanted, what she didn't — everything a person should have, and not one word of it had come up.

It was just a meeting to hand over an easy-to-handle item.

These people wore neckties, drank water from glass cups, spoke in polite tones — in other words, with faces so elegant and so **polished**, they were erasing a person.

*That woman — she's been hearing that kind of talk since she was eight years old.*

The image of Moyeon's face in the archive came back to her.

The line about learning how to smile, on purpose. The story of letting go of her mother's hand and looking back. That flat, quiet voice, saying she never even made it to the funeral.

*Her whole life.*

Something hot rose up inside her chest.

It was anger, and at the same time, a pity too heavy to bear.

Sujin clenched her fist, then opened it again.

Right now, she wanted to kick that door open and overturn something.

*But what would that even do.*

Sujin clenched her teeth.

Right now, inside that room, there were three people treating her like an object. And standing outside the door was one more — the one who would sell that object off, tomorrow morning.

*How am I any different from those people.*

The moment that thought hit her, her back went cold against the wall.

At least the people in that room knew what they were doing. They sat there knowing it was a sale — both sides of it.

Only she was doing it in secret. With a kind face.

*I'm the worst one here.*

The door opened, and people came out.

Moyeon's face was still blank.

Sujin couldn't look at that face straight on.

"This way, Managing Director."

Sujin said it briefly, walking ahead. Her voice sounded exactly like it always did.

Inside the car, neither of them said a word either.

Moyeon just looked out the window, and Sujin stole glances at her profile in the rearview mirror, more than once.

Once, their eyes seemed to meet in the mirror. Sujin looked away fast.

*Did Moyeon see that.*

Moyeon showed no reaction at all. She just kept looking out the window.

*That same face, from eight years old until now.*

Sujin wanted to say something to her.

*Are you okay? No, not that.*

*Did you hear everything back there? — What is wrong with you.*

The sentence flipped over and over in her head, and every time, she erased it.

In the end, she said nothing at all, and the car reached the penthouse.

Right before getting out, Moyeon spoke first.

"Assistant Manager."

"Yes."

"That was hard work today."

That was all.

Sujin couldn't answer.

*Hard work, she says.*

Tomorrow, this woman would be at the airport.

And in this car, Sujin was the only one who knew it.
