English

That night Moyeon actually took the **sedative** — the pill that puts a person to sleep.

It was not a performance.

> **[Prescription Record]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Drug | Sleep-inducing sedative |
> | Prescribed by | The group's designated hospital |
> | Started at | Age twenty-three |
> | Remarks | Prescription slips held by the secretariat |

It had started when she was twenty-three. That year a marriage meeting fell apart at the last moment, and she sat for hours in front of the Chairman before she was let out. After the night she lay awake until morning, the prescriptions began.

At eighteen, the first time she was sent to one of those meetings, she at least cried. By twenty-three she did not even cry. Instead, sleep would not come.

After that she could count on her fingers the nights she had slept without the drug.

That night was no different. She had only taken a slightly larger **dose** than usual — a little more of the same pill. What she had heard in the Chairman's office that afternoon would not leave her head.

*If I sleep a little longer, maybe tomorrow will be easier.*

That was all it was. It had not been meant for anyone to see.

By the time she heard the door open, Moyeon was already sitting on the floor.

*Why is there no security?*

Her head was fogged. She could not put the situation in order.

"...Managing Director?"

The voice was familiar. Then came the sense of someone bending at the knee to meet her eye level.

*Ah, that Assistant Manager.*

Moyeon looked up at the face with clouded eyes.

None of this was in the plan. She had never meant to be seen like this. But her body would not obey.

*Well, not a bad turn.*

In one corner of her fading mind the calculation went on. A woman who seems weak, and the instinct in others to protect her. It was a picture she would have had to build over the next eight months anyway. It had only come a little early.

"It is all right. I take this every day. If I do not take it..."

Her words trailed off. Her body tipped to one side.

A hand took hold of her shoulder.

It was **coarse**. Not smooth — a hand with the hard skin that work leaves behind.

*What is this hand?*

The hands that took hold of Moyeon inside Taesan were always **courteous**. They were so correct that they came out cold. Hands that lifted her and set her down with every manner in place.

But this hand was different.

"You can stand up."

It was not a question but half an order. It was rude.

And that rudeness, strangely, put her at ease.

Her body was lifted. An arm came around behind her back and her weight went onto it. It did not shake.

*Warm.*

The thought crossed her clouded mind. It was not calculation. She simply felt it.

The moment she was laid on the sofa, Moyeon's hand moved on its own.

It caught the collar of the other woman's jacket.

"Do not go."

The words came out before anything else.

*...What did I just say?*

Even through the fog, the fact stayed with her, cold. It was not calculation. It was not acting either. The words had simply come out.

In twenty-one years in this house she had never told anyone not to go. There had been no one she could say it to, and she had known it would do no good anyway.

"I will bring you some water."

The voice moved away. Moyeon kept her eyes closed and listened to the footsteps.

*In eight months I am going to send that person to prison.*

For the first time the thought arrived as a clear sentence. Until then that person had been 'the operator', 'the one who would be left'. A piece with no name and no face.

And just now, that piece had picked her up and carried her.

*I only have to think of her as the person who makes the papers.*

Moyeon said it to herself with her eyes closed. It was a thing she could think of that way. The way she always had.

She heard the water glass being set down. Moyeon kept her eyes closed.

It was a few days later.

On the way down to the underground parking lot Moyeon had the car stopped.

It was the side entrance of the building. Two people were walking out of the alley.

One of them wore a leather jacket. It was not the kind of clothing anyone wore around here.

And Lee Sujin was standing next to him.

Moyeon lowered the window halfway.

> **[What Moyeon Already Knew]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Real name | Lee Sujin |
> | Record | Document forgery, shell company design |
> | Known as | the Table-Rigging Bitch |
> | Arrest record | None |
> | Current identity | Built by Jihoon |

It was the record she had seen on the tablet eight months before.

*He must be from the other side.*

That was Moyeon's guess. And the guess would turn out to be right.

Cigarette smoke rose over the alley. Whatever passed between the two of them did not reach her.

What she did notice was Lee Sujin's posture.

The shoulders were locked. She faced the other person straight on, and yet her body was set to step back.

*She is tense.*

Moyeon watched the scene for a long time.

Someone who must not be found out had almost been found out. However perfect the identity Jihoon had built, one person who knew that face was enough to make it all **collapse** — everything would fall at once.

*If I made one call to General Affairs right now.*

It could be done. One word — a suspicious man had come to the lobby, and that Assistant Manager had taken him out — would be enough.

Then that one word would overturn the table right there.

After that, Sujin would be fired, Jihoon would have to find someone else, and she herself would have to stay in this house eight months longer.

*...That is how it would go.*

Holding the phone in her hand, Moyeon sat for a long while.

Then she simply put it down.

*I still need her.*

That was how she explained it to herself.

Just then Lee Sujin came out of the alley and raised her head.

Their eyes met.

Moyeon rolled the window up.

The next day the face of Lee Sujin, who came for a sign-off, was stiffer than usual.

*That is the face of someone waiting to be asked something.*

Moyeon caught it.

Ask whether she had seen the alley yesterday, ask who that person was, and Lee Sujin would give an answer she had prepared. She had probably built one plausible lie already.

*I will not ask.*

Asking would create two things.

One was that Lee Sujin would begin to guard herself against her. The other was that Lee Sujin would have to tell one more lie.

*Neither is any good.*

And there was a third reason, one Moyeon did not want to admit.

She did not want to hear this person lie.

"What about today's papers?"

Moyeon asked it casually, as if nothing had happened.

She saw a little of the strength go out of Lee Sujin's shoulders.

*Relief.*

Watching that reaction, Moyeon felt something turn uncomfortable in one corner of her chest.

Only that person did not know that the one who would sell her in eight months was Moyeon herself.
