사무실로 돌아온 수진은 노트북 앞에 앉았다.

5년 전에도 지훈은 아무렇지 않게 사람을 버리는 얘기를 했다. 표정 하나 안 바뀌던 인간이었다.
그런데 아까는 흔들렸다.

수진은 5년 전 그날 이후로, 모연에 대해 알아본 적이 한 번도 없었다. 알고 싶지 않았다. 어딘가에서 자유롭게 잘 살고 있을 거라고, 그렇게 생각하는 편이 차라리 나았다.

수진은 네 장의 서명을 나란히 놓고 비교했다.
*이건 사람이 자기 의지로 쓴 서명이 아니야.*
손이 떨리는 상태에서, 반복적으로 강요당한 서명이었다.
수진은 의자에 등을 기댔다. 심장이 이상하게 뛰기 시작했다.

한참 화면을 바라보던 수진이 자리에서 일어났다.

"뭘 확인하라고?"
"전기. 5년치 사용량."

답은 반나절 만에 왔다.

Since that day five years ago Sujin had never once looked into what had become of Moyeon. She had not wanted to know. It was easier to believe that somewhere out there she was living free and living well.

Sujin opened a search box.

Since that case five years ago, the name Kang Moyeon had vanished from the world completely.

Sujin moved on to the next step.
Sujin got in touch with her old contacts.
"Kang Moyeon. Run a check on her for any trace — cards, phone lines, anything."
The answer came the next day.

The list of directors of Saint River Partners. The name at the very top.
**Kang Mo Yeon.**
At the time she had been angry. Angry that Jihoon had gone so far as to use Moyeon's name.
Now the same name looked like something else.

It was the handwriting she had seen hundreds of times on sign-off papers five years before. Straight and neat.
But something was wrong.
*The writing is shaky.*
The ends of the strokes trembled very slightly. The one from three years ago trembled more than the one from four years ago, and last year's was almost impossible to make out.
Sujin laid the four signatures side by side and compared them.
*This is not a signature a person wrote of her own free will.*
It was a signature forced over and over out of a hand that was shaking.
Sujin leaned back in her chair. Her heart had started to beat strangely.

Sujin checked where each of the documents had been sent from.

A **lone** building at the foot of a mountain. One road ran up to it, and around it there was nothing at all.
Sujin stared at the screen for a long time, then got to her feet.
*It cannot be.*
Sujin got in touch with her old contacts again.
"There is a building in Gapyeong — just find out for me whether anyone is in it."
"Find out what?"
"Electricity. Five years of **usage**."
*A person who lives in that building uses electricity.*
The answer came in half a day.

Sujin got to her feet. The hand reaching for her jacket was shaking.
