English
Eleven o'clock at night.
It had already been twenty minutes since the **navigation** system stopped giving directions. She drove up a mountain road where the pavement had ended, with nothing but her headlights to see by.
*Out to a place like this.*
Sujin tightened her grip on the wheel.
The whole way up, her head would not go quiet.
For five years she had thought hundreds of times about what she would do if she ever met this person. Grab her by the collar, or shout and ask why she had done it, or say nothing at all and just turn away after one look.
*But that was talk for when I was still outside.*
Now there was a different problem.
The power use that had held steady for five years now. The signature that shook a little more every year. The building with no windows.
*I have no idea what is in there.*
Sujin pushed that thought away, over and over.
It would not stay pushed away.
The building came into view. A two-story country house standing alone halfway up the mountain. Not one window had a light in it.
Sujin stopped the car and got out.
There was no sound at all except the wind. There were no houses and no street lights.
*Five years in here.*
Sujin put a cigarette between her lips, then put it back without lighting it.
Her hands were shaking.
The front door was locked.
Sujin walked once around the building.
Every window on the first floor was blocked from the inside. Not with curtains, but with boards. And the nails had been driven in from outside.
Sujin ran her fingertips over the nail marks.
**Rust** had come up over them. They had been there a long time.
*How many years has this been up?*
Around the back there was one more door, a steel one. It was a door with stairs behind it, going down to the basement.
A digital lock was fitted to it.
Sujin took her tools out of her bag. It was the same job she had done in the records room five years before.
Only that time it had been to get two people out.
She opened the panel and looked over the wiring.
*This one is newer than I expected.*
Ten minutes went by. Twenty minutes went by. Sweat came up on her fingertips and made them slip.
She made one mistake and had to start again from the beginning.
*Fuck.*
Her hands had never slipped on something like this before. Not in the back alleys, not inside prison.
*Faster. Come on, faster.*
About thirty minutes in, a low electronic tone sounded and the lock opened.
The smell of mold hit her the moment the door opened.
The stairs were narrow and steep. Sujin turned on the flashlight on her phone and went down one step at a time.
At the bottom there was one more door.
This time it was a **padlock**. It was the kind that locked from the outside.
*From the outside.*
Sujin's hand stopped.
This was not a basement door. A basement door locks from the inside. The person inside locks it to shut out the danger outside.
There was only one kind of door that locked from the outside.
*The kind meant to keep the person inside from getting out.*
She had come here knowing. She had read the power use, read the signatures, guessed at the rest, and driven all the way out here.
But touching the padlock with her own hand was a different thing.
Sujin stood where she was for a moment.
*And what is behind it, if I open it.*
Five years. In that time she had eaten, slept, learned from Dogyeong, walked out of prison, and built a company.
And in that time, behind this door—
*Do not think about it.*
Sujin picked up her tools.
Breaking the padlock did not take long.
She pushed the door open.
The room was dark. A single light was on in the ceiling, but almost no light came from it.
Concrete walls. No windows. One narrow bed and one table.
And in front of the wall, a person was sitting.
Sujin could not move from where she stood.
*That.*
The hair had grown out long. The body was so thin that the clothes looked draped over it rather than worn. Knees drawn up, back against the wall, the person did not move at all.
Sujin knew that posture.
She had seen it in prison. The ones who had been in a long time sat like that. Back flat against the wall, knees up, eyes resting on nothing.
*But in there you at least have a sentence to serve.*
The **beam** of the flashlight ran along the wall.
Something had been carved into it.
Lines. Dozens of them. No, far more than that.
Next to them there was something else.
Sujin moved the light over.
Letters. Scratched into the concrete with a fingernail. Gone over so many times that the grooves ran deep.
*Sujin.*
It was her own name.
The flashlight shook in Sujin's hand.
As the light came in, the person in front of the wall slowly looked up.
Their eyes met.
It was Moyeon.
Moyeon did not react at all.
She did not startle, and she did not cry out. She only looked at Sujin with clouded eyes.
"...Kang Moyeon."
It was all Sujin could do to get the name out.
Moyeon's lips moved a little. No sound came out of them.
Sujin took one step closer.
At that Moyeon slowly shook her head. Then she turned her face back to the wall.
*What is she doing.*
Sujin could not understand it.
"It is me. Lee Sujin."
Moyeon was still looking only at the wall.
"...You came again."
It was a small voice. It was a voice she had not heard in five years.
"What did you say?"
"Go. You disappear once morning comes anyway."
*A **vision**.*
Only then did Sujin understand.
This person did not believe, right now, that Sujin was real.
Sujin bent her knees where she stood. She brought her eyes level with Moyeon's.
"I am real."
"..."
"Touch me."
Sujin held out her hand.
For a long while Moyeon only looked at the hand. Then, very slowly, she put out one finger.
The fingertips touched.
Moyeon's body flinched.
"...Warm."
The voice cracked.
Sujin took hold of that hand. There was nothing left of it but bone.
"Are you real?"
Moyeon asked. For the first time her eyes had come into focus.
"Yes."
"You really came?"
"Yes."
Moyeon's face twisted. It was the face of someone about to break into tears.
But no tears came. It was as if five years had dried them all up.
Instead a strange sound leaked out of her throat. It was not crying and it was not breathing, but something closer to an animal sound.
Sujin pulled those shoulders in and held them.
The body in her arms weighed almost nothing. It was less like holding her than like holding on to her.
*What is this.*
There were things she had been getting ready for five years.
To ask why she had done it. Why she had struck her hand away that day, and what that night had been. In her cell she had polished the sentences hundreds of times. She had even settled on the order to ask them in.
Not one of those sentences would come out now.
*I did not hold on for five years to see this.*
To blame someone, the other person had to be whole. To grab someone by the collar, there had to be a collar to grab.
In her arms there was only bone.
*That bastard Jihoon.*
When that name came up, everything else was pushed aside. Five years of blame changed where it was going.
*But it took me five years to get here.*
That thought came right after.
She could have looked. In prison, and after she came out. But she had not. Because she had thought she was betrayed. Because it was easier to believe that somewhere out there Moyeon was eating well and living well.
*This is five years of me not looking.*
Sujin's arms tightened around her.
From inside her arms the animal sound kept leaking out.
Sujin stroked that back a few times. She did not know what to say, so only her hand moved.
"...Let us go."
That was all she could get out.
"Let us get out of here first."
Moyeon mumbled something. Sujin could not catch it.
"What did you say?"
"...Are you real?"
It was that question again.
"Yes."
Sujin answered.
"This time I will not disappear."
She did not know herself what she was basing that on.
But once she had said it, one thing she had not been able to decide in five years was decided.
