English
Daniel, who had been choosing his words, stopped choosing them.
"At first it was just funny."
It was Korean. He did not switch languages anymore.
"The new guy curses me behind my back and thinks he hasn't been caught. That's funny, isn't it."
"...It was funny?"
"Yeah. About two weeks."
"And after two weeks."
Daniel looked at him.
"After two weeks, you only seemed like yourself in those moments."
Hangyeol raised his eyes.
"In the kitchen all you ever do is say Yes, Chef. You don't even change your face. But your voice changes only when you turn away and speak Korean."
Daniel came one step closer.
"I didn't want to take that away from you. The moment I said I understood, you would shut your mouth."
"So you lied to me for a month?"
"Yeah."
He gave no **excuse**. The anger Hangyeol had prepared lost the place it was meant to land.
"And I did that for my own sake. I'm not going to say sorry. Because I'm not sorry."
"Why were you like that today."
Hangyeol asked.
"Like what."
"You didn't even look at me. Three days straight you made it hard for a person to breathe, and today, not once."
Daniel let out a short breath. It was close to a laugh, but not the happy kind.
"I was going to tell you tonight."
"...What?"
"I said I was going to tell you after I got the signature. For three days that was all I thought about."
Daniel braced a hand on the desk.
"To do that I couldn't go near you during the day. If I had come close one more time, I would have done it in the kitchen."
Hangyeol's mouth opened halfway and closed.
For three days he had read the distance between them as hurt, and every bit of it had been calculated. Daniel's not looking at him was not a lack of interest but the exact **opposite**.
"Then earlier, when Liam..."
"I saw it."
"You weren't looking."
"I was trying not to look."
Daniel's voice dropped.
"I saw all of it — Liam talking about the duck while he grabbed your waist and spun you around. I'm not going to tell you what I held back right then."
"Chef."
"Daniel."
"...Daniel."
It was the first time Hangyeol had called him by that name.
Daniel looked down at him. The distance left between them was now less than a single step.
"I want you."
Hangyeol's heart skipped a beat.
"It's been a month. To be exact, since you asked me in the walk-in whether Clause 4 applied to me too."
"That day was my first day."
"Exactly."
He said it straight. This man had spent a month before he decided, and three seconds after he decided.
Hangyeol was about to say something, but Daniel went on first.
"But there's one problem."
"..."
"I'm holding your visa."
Hangyeol's face went **stiff**.
"I'm the only person in this restaurant who can sign the 482. So if I put a hand on you now."
Daniel cut himself off. He looked like a man who did not want to say the next sentence.
"You are not in a position to refuse."
The room went quiet.
From downstairs, the sound of someone knocking glasses together came up through the wall. It was far away.
Hangyeol turned that sentence over slowly. It was only then that he understood why this man had always stopped two steps away for the past month. It was not because of the rule. It was because he was a man who knew how to calculate.
"Daniel."
"Yeah."
"Are you saying that to me right now, or to yourself?"
Daniel's eyes **wavered**.
"...Both."
"Then let me correct one thing."
Hangyeol lifted his head.
"Whether or not I am in a position to refuse — I am the one who judges that."
"Hangyeol."
"I asked you in the walk-in on my first day. Whether Clause 4 applied to the head chef too. And you said it applied to you as well."
Hangyeol took one step forward. This time there was nowhere for Daniel to step back.
"If we stand under the same rule, then each of us makes his own judgment. For you to decide in my place that I have no such right, Chef — that isn't in the contract either."
Daniel looked at him.
For a few seconds there was nothing. And then, for the first time, Hangyeol saw on this man's face the look of a calculation that was finished.
"You know you can't take that back."
"I know."
"I don't ask twice."
"You don't even have to ask."
Daniel's hand closed around Hangyeol's jaw. It was the hand that had been careful for three days even when passing a single spoon.
"Hangyeol Seo."
"Yes."
"Doing this in my kitchen is a **violation** of the rule I made."
"I know."
"And you know what happens when someone breaks it."
"You said you'd add it as Clause 13."
Daniel laughed low. And before the laugh was finished, he lowered his head.
Beyond the door, downstairs, the sound of people celebrating the A+ was still rising through the wall. It did not reach this room.
