English
Taekyung came back and stood beside Eunho again.
Another long silence passed. Eunho asked nothing.
"It's strange," Taekyung murmured. "Everyone knows there's something, but you're the first person who never asked." His voice was slightly rough. "Maybe that's why I keep wanting to tell you."
Rain ran off the edge of the eaves in thin lines.
"When I was twelve, there was a fire at my house."
Eunho held his breath.
"My mother shouted at me to get my younger brother out first. But I ran into my own room instead. To grab the thing I cared about most. Just for a few seconds."
His words stopped. His shoulders were trembling faintly.
"By the time I reached his room, the smoke was already too thick. He was hiding under the bed — the way they teach you at school. Before I could reach him, my father pulled me out."
Another long silence.
"If it hadn't been for those few seconds, I would have gotten there first."
Eunho could not find any words of comfort. Anything he said would have been too light for this moment.
So he simply reached out and took Taekyung's hand.
It was cold from the rain.
"I won't tell you it's all right," Eunho said quietly. "It's okay not to be all right today."
Taekyung did not answer. Instead, he finally let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for a very long time.
The rain was thinning.
