18화 아무 말도 하지 않는 것

다음 날 아침, 태경이 출근했다.

평소보다 조금 늦은 시간이었다. 자리에 앉아 컴퓨터를 켜는 모습이 여느 날과 다르지 않았다. 눈이 조금 부어 있는 것 말고는.

은호는 아무것도 묻지 않았다. 그저 평소처럼 인사했다. "안녕하세요."

"…네."

오전 내내 둘 다 평소처럼 일했다. 회의도 평소처럼 했고, 자료도 평소처럼 넘겼다.

점심시간이 되기 직전, 태경이 자리에서 일어나며 짧게 말했다.

"밥 같이 먹을래요?"

은호가 고개를 들었다. 태경은 이미 시선을 돌린 뒤였다. 마치 별거 아닌 말을 한 것처럼.

"…네."

식당까지 걸어가는 길에 둘 다 별말이 없었다. 다만 신호등 앞에 나란히 섰을 때, 태경이 문득 말했다.

"어제요."

"네."

"고마웠어요."

은호가 뭐라 답하기도 전에 신호가 바뀌었다. 태경이 먼저 걸음을 뗐다. 은호는 반 발짝 뒤에서 그 뒷모습을 보며 걸었다.

이상하게, 그 반 발짝이 아주 가깝게 느껴졌다.

The next morning, Taekyung came in.

A little later than usual. He sat down and turned on his computer the way he did any other day. Apart from his eyes being slightly swollen.

Eunho asked nothing. He simply greeted him as usual. "Morning."

"…Morning."

All morning they both worked as they always did. The meeting went as it always did. Documents were passed as they always were.

Just before lunch, Taekyung stood up and said briefly,

"Do you want to get lunch together?"

Eunho looked up. Taekyung had already turned away, as if he had said nothing of consequence.

"…Sure."

Neither of them said much on the walk to the restaurant. But when they stopped side by side at a crosswalk, Taekyung suddenly spoke.

"Yesterday."

"Yes."

"Thank you."

Before Eunho could answer, the light changed. Taekyung stepped forward first. Eunho walked half a step behind, watching his back.

Strangely, that half step felt very close.
