32화 남은 자리

하윤이 떠난 다음 주, 사무실이 조금 조용해졌다.

은호는 자기가 안심하고 있다는 걸 알았다. 그리고 그 안심이 부끄러웠다.

*나쁜 사람도 아니었는데.*

오히려 마지막 날에 사과까지 했던 사람이다. 그런데도 그 사람이 없어지니 마음이 편해졌다는 게, 은호는 스스로 마음에 들지 않았다.

수요일 점심, 태경이 물었다.

"하윤 씨가 뭐라고 했어요? 마지막 날에."

"…어떻게 아셨어요?"

"그날 은호 씨 표정이 이상했어요."

은호는 잠깐 망설이다 답했다.

"물어보라고 하셨어요. 대리님이 준비됐을 때."

태경이 젓가락을 내려놨다.

한참 아무 말도 없었다. 은호는 괜히 말했나 싶었다.

"…그 사람답네요." 태경이 짧게 말했다.

그러곤 덧붙였다. "3년 전 얘기죠."

"네."

"언제 물어볼 거예요?"

은호가 고개를 들었다. 태경이 은호를 보고 있었다. 피하지 않는 눈이었다.

"…준비되셨어요?"

"아니요." 태경이 담담하게 답했다. "근데 은호 씨가 물어보면, 그때 준비할게요."

The week after Ms. Ha left, the office felt a little quieter.

Eunho realized he was relieved. And he was ashamed of the relief.

*She wasn't even a bad person.*

She had apologized on her last day. And still, feeling more at ease once she was gone was something Eunho didn't like about himself.

At lunch on Wednesday, Taekyung asked,

"What did she say to you? On the last day."

"…How did you know?"

"Your face was strange that day."

Eunho hesitated, then answered.

"She told me to ask. When you were ready."

Taekyung set down his chopsticks.

For a long moment he said nothing. Eunho wondered if he shouldn't have said it.

"…That sounds like her," Taekyung said briefly.

Then he added, "You mean about three years ago."

"Yes."

"When are you going to ask?"

Eunho looked up. Taekyung was looking at him. His eyes didn't move away.

"…Are you ready?"

"No," Taekyung said plainly. "But if you ask, I'll get ready then."
