37화 어긋남

월요일 아침, 태경이 평소보다 일찍 나와 있었다.

은호가 인사했다. "안녕하세요."

"…네."

그게 다였다. 그리고 그날 하루 종일, 태경은 은호와 눈을 마주치지 않았다.

오후 회의에서 은호가 자료를 설명하는 동안에도 태경은 화면만 봤다. 질문도 하지 않았다. 평소라면 반드시 한두 개는 짚었을 텐데.

퇴근 무렵, 은호가 결국 물었다.

"대리님, 저 뭐 잘못한 거 있어요?"

태경이 잠깐 멈췄다. 그러곤 답했다.

"아니요."

"근데 왜—"

"프로젝트 막바지라 그래요." 태경이 서류를 정리했다. "다음 주에 최종 발표라서."

명백한 거짓말이었다. 은호도 알았고, 태경도 자기가 거짓말을 하고 있다는 걸 알았다.

은호는 더 묻지 않았다.

그날 밤, 은호는 침대에 누워 천장을 봤다.

*물어보면 준비하겠다고 했으면서.*

그런데 지금은 물어볼 수도 없게 됐다.

On Monday morning, Taekyung was in earlier than usual.

Eunho greeted him. "Morning."

"…Morning."

That was all. And for the rest of the day, Taekyung did not meet his eyes.

In the afternoon meeting, while Eunho explained his materials, Taekyung looked only at the screen. He asked nothing. Normally he would have flagged one or two points without fail.

Near the end of the day, Eunho finally asked.

"Did I do something wrong?"

Taekyung paused. Then he answered.

"No."

"Then why—"

"It's the end of the project." He straightened his papers. "The final presentation is next week."

It was plainly a lie. Eunho knew it, and Taekyung knew he was lying.

Eunho didn't press further.

That night, lying in bed, Eunho stared at the ceiling.

*He said he'd get ready if I asked.*

And now there was no way to ask.
