5화 야근

첫 야근이었다.

밤 아홉 시가 넘자 사무실에는 두 사람만 남았다. 형광등 소리가 유난히 크게 들렸다.

은호가 자료를 넘기다가 무심코 물었다. "대리님은 야근 자주 하세요?"

"필요하면요."

"필요 없는 날도 있어요?"

태경이 화면에서 눈을 떼고 은호를 봤다. 잠깐이었다. 그러곤 다시 화면으로 시선을 돌렸다. "…있죠."

그 짧은 침묵이 뭔가 대답 같았다.

열한 시쯤, 태경이 자료 한 부를 은호 쪽으로 밀며 말했다. "여기까지만 하고 가요." 은호가 웃었다. "대리님은요?" "저는 좀 더 있다가." "그럼 저도요." 태경이 뭐라 말하려다 그만뒀다.

그날 두 사람은 자정까지 나란히 앉아 있었다.

It was his first late night at the office.

After nine, only the two of them were left. The hum of the fluorescent lights seemed unusually loud.

Turning a page, Eunho asked without thinking, "Do you work late often?"

"When it's necessary."

"Are there days when it isn't?"

Taekyung looked up from his screen at Eunho. Only for a moment. Then he turned back. "…There are."

That brief silence felt like an answer of its own.

Around eleven, Taekyung pushed a set of documents toward him. "Stop here and go home." Eunho smiled. "What about you?" "I'll stay a bit longer." "Then so will I." Taekyung started to say something, then let it go.

That night the two of them sat side by side until midnight.
