56화 출국

5월 2일 아침, 인천공항.

은호는 배웅을 나가지 않기로 했었다. 어제 그렇게 말했고, 태경도 그러라고 했다. 아침 여섯 시 비행기였고, 공항까지 두 시간이 걸렸다.

그런데 은호는 새벽 세 시에 눈을 떴다.

출국장 앞에서 태경을 찾는 데 십 분이 걸렸다. 짐은 캐리어 하나와 백팩 하나였다. 3년 치 짐이 상자 두 개였던 사람다웠다.

"…왜 왔어요."

"자다가 깼어요." 은호가 말했다. "그래서 그냥 왔어요."

태경이 은호를 봤다. 뭐라고 말하려다 그만두는 것 같았다.

"저 이제 들어가야 해요."

"네."

"비행이 여섯 시간 반쯤이에요. 도착하면 연락할게요."

"네."

태경이 캐리어 손잡이를 잡았다. 그러곤 잠깐 멈췄다.

"은호 씨."

"네."

"6월에 공고 나면요."

은호가 고개를 들었다.

"제가 선발에 안 들어가요. 규정이 그래요." 태경이 담담하게 말했다. "그러니까 지원해도 제가 도와줄 수 있는 게 없어요."

"알아요."

"…알고도 지원할 거예요?"

은호가 웃었다.

"그건 제가 정한다니까요."

태경이 아무 말도 하지 않았다. 잠깐 그렇게 서 있다가, 손을 뻗어 은호의 어깨를 짧게 잡았다가 놓았다.

그러곤 돌아섰다.

은호는 그 뒷모습이 게이트 안으로 사라질 때까지 서 있었다.

Morning, May 2. Incheon Airport.

Eunho had decided not to see him off. He had said so the day before, and Taekyung had agreed. The flight was at six, and the airport was two hours away.

Eunho woke at three anyway.

It took ten minutes to find Taekyung outside the departure gate. He had one suitcase and one backpack — fitting, for a man whose three years there had fit into two boxes.

"…Why are you here."

"I woke up," Eunho said. "So I came."

Taekyung looked at him. He seemed about to say something, then let it go.

"I have to go in now."

"Right."

"It's about a six-and-a-half-hour flight. I'll message you when I land."

"Right."

Taekyung took hold of the suitcase handle. Then he paused.

"Eunho."

"Yes?"

"When the posting opens in June."

Eunho looked up.

"I'm not part of the selection. That's the rule." He said it evenly. "So there's nothing I can do to help you, even if you apply."

"I know."

"…And knowing that, you'll still apply?"

Eunho smiled.

"I told you that's mine to decide."

Taekyung said nothing. He stood there a moment, then reached out, held Eunho's shoulder briefly, and let go.

Then he turned.

Eunho stayed there until Taekyung's back disappeared through the gate.
