57화 시차

한 시간이었다.

싱가포르와 서울의 시차. 은호는 그게 얼마나 짧은 건지, 그리고 얼마나 긴 건지를 그달에 알게 됐다.

태경은 도착한 날 연락을 했다. 사진 한 장과 짧은 문장이었다.

*도착했어요. 여기 덥네요.*

그다음 주에는 두 번. 그다음 주에는 한 번.

바쁜 게 당연했다. 지사를 처음부터 여는 일이었고, 현지 채용 세 자리를 동시에 진행하고 있었다. 은호도 실무가 아직 손에 익지 않아 숨 돌릴 틈이 없기는 마찬가지였다.

그런데도 은호는 매일 밤 휴대폰을 확인했다.

5월 셋째 주 금요일, 오후 여섯 시.

태경에게서 메시지가 왔다.

*지금 통화 돼요?*

은호가 답을 보내기도 전에 전화가 울렸다.

"여보세요."

"…은호 씨."

목소리가 이상했다. 평소보다 낮았고, 조금 잠겨 있었다.

"무슨 일 있으세요?"

한참 대답이 없었다.

"아니요." 태경이 말했다. "그냥 목소리 들으려고요."

은호는 아무 말도 하지 못했다.

"이상하죠." 태경이 짧게 웃었다. "여기 사람들 다 친절한데, 하루 종일 영어로 말하고 나면 저녁에 아무 말도 하기가 싫어요."

"…네."

"근데 은호 씨한테는 말하고 싶어져요."

창밖이 어두워지고 있었다.

One hour.

That was the time difference between Singapore and Seoul. That month, Eunho learned how short that was — and how long.

Taekyung messaged the day he arrived. One photo and one short line.

*Landed. It's hot here.*

Twice the following week. Once the week after that.

Being busy was expected. He was opening a branch from nothing and running three local hiring processes at the same time. Eunho was still finding his feet in operations and had little room to breathe either.

Even so, Eunho checked his phone every night.

Friday of the third week of May, six in the evening.

A message came from Taekyung.

*Are you free to talk?*

The phone rang before he could answer.

"Hello."

"…Eunho."

His voice was off. Lower than usual, slightly rough.

"Is something wrong?"

There was no answer for a while.

"No," Taekyung said. "I just wanted to hear your voice."

Eunho couldn't say anything.

"It's strange." Taekyung laughed briefly. "Everyone here is kind. But after speaking English all day, by evening I don't want to say anything at all."

"…Right."

"But with you, I find I want to."

Outside, the sky was going dark.
