English
Nothing happened for five days after the report was filed.
Yona oiled the wagon axles. Sera filled in the ninety-sixth column of the ledger. Martin coiled rope at the front of the warehouse.
On the morning of the sixth day, a union messenger came.
"Haran Trading House."
"That's me."
The wax seal was still in place. Rine broke it open.
> **NOTICE OF END OF DOCUMENT RE-EXAMINATION**
> *Sent: 21 August*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Subject | All documents submitted by Haran Trading House |
> | Result | **Re-examination ended** |
> | Deposit receipt (12 July) | **Confirmed forged · void** |
> | Deposit receipt (3 May, three years ago) | Depositor unknown · **inquiry closed** |
> | Preservation chests | Two seized by the union · returned upon depositor's claim |
> | Action against Haran Trading House | Forged document submitted · **fine of 300 silver gwan** |
> | Certification suspension | **Lifted** |
> | Reinstatement review | **Opened** |
Rine read the last two lines first.
"Uncle. It's over."
"It is over."
Bern took the paper and read it again from the top. Then his finger stopped at the third line.
"Miss. Look here."
"The deposit receipt from three years ago?"
"It says inquiry closed."
"What does closed mean?"
"It means no one looks at it anymore."
Rine looked at that line.
"Because the depositor is unknown?"
"That is so. The depositor field is empty, so no one can confirm whose it is. Because it cannot be confirmed, the inquiry is closed."
"I know. Habel Grote."
"What Miss knows is the name Martin wrote on the wall." Bern set the paper down. "That is not a document."
"Then what about the asset list I submitted to Doryun Company? I wrote that name in the source field there."
"That was an estimate Haran Trading House wrote in. No basis is attached to it."
Rine looked at the notice again.
"So because I reported it, the fake deposit receipt is gone and the union took the boxes. And that person's name is not left anywhere."
"...That is so."
"Uncle. What does **seized** mean?"
"It means the union takes it and holds it."
"Where do they keep it?"
"The union **storehouse**."
"Who watches over that storehouse?"
Bern did not answer.
"Uncle."
"...It falls under the license office."
Rine set the notice on the table.
"So that person's things went into that person's own warehouse."
"It says returned upon depositor's claim. If a claim is made, it is returned."
"But to claim it, you have to write the depositor's name."
"You must write it."
"So seizure is the way to take it without writing a name."
Yona spoke from beside the warehouse door, the same as the day she had talked about the boxes.
"Those boxes — four hundred fifty gwan each."
No one answered.
Sera brought over the counting board.
"The **fine** is three hundred gwan. What is left is six hundred nine gwan. Six hundred nine gwan."
Rine looked at the **abacus**.
"What about the nine hundred gwan for the preservation chests?"
"It comes out of the assets. It was never ours to begin with."
"Then the asset list I submitted to Doryun Company has become wrong."
"It is not wrong," Bern said. "At the time, the deposit receipt was valid. It has become **void** now, and it became void because Miss reported it."
"Then do I have to tell Doryun Company again?"
"You must tell them."
Rine nodded.
"I will write it. I was the one who submitted it, so I should be the one to fix it."
The reinstatement review took four days.
The documents were already all in place. The application, the missing quarter's ledger, two guarantee letters.
On the twenty-fifth of August, a paper came from the license office.
> **UNION NOTICE OF REINSTATEMENT**
> *Effective: 25 August*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Subject | Haran Trading House (Registration No. R-2291) |
> | Standing | **Reinstated as associate member** |
> | Guarantor | Seid Cloth Guild · Doryun Company |
> | Officer in charge | Roude |
> | Remarks | Fine of 300 silver gwan confirmed paid in full |
Rine took it and stood on the bridge.
The notice of loss of standing that had been posted on the board was already taken down. Only four large nail marks were left.
"Uncle. My name is not there."
"It is not."
"On the sixteenth of July, it was there, ninth on the list."
"It was."
Rine folded the notice.
"It took forty days."
When she came back to the warehouse, Rendal was sitting at the table.
The door was not broken. It was also the first time he had sat and waited.
"I hear you got reinstated."
"...Yes."
"Congratulations." Rendal set his hat on the table. "Now you are subject to certification too."
"What does that mean?"
"An associate member files a ledger every quarter. And every sale gets certified." Rendal said. "While you were struck off, no one watched. From now on, everyone does."
Rine put the notice in the drawer.
"It is better to be watched. If no one watches, I cannot sell at all."
Rendal laughed.
"That is true."
"So why did you come?"
Rendal took out a paper. There was no fold in it.
> **STATEMENT OF DEBT**
>
> Debtor: Haran Trading House
> Creditor: Rendal Company
> Balance: **4,200 silver gwan**
> Repayment date: **30 November**
"I came to confirm it. I signed the four-month extension, so it stands."
Rine looked at the balance.
"Today is the twenty-fifth of August."
"That is right."
"Ninety-seven days are left."
"You count fast."
After Rendal left, Sera set down the abacus.
"Money left is six hundred nine gwan. Money owed is four thousand two hundred gwan."
"How much is short?"
"Three thousand five hundred ninety-one gwan. Three thousand five hundred ninety-one gwan."
Rine looked around the warehouse.
The spot where the crates had been was empty. There was no dye, no oil. Three wagons stood against the wall.
"Uncle. Is there anything left in the warehouse to sell?"
"There is none."
"Ninety-seven days for three thousand five hundred ninety-one gwan."
"That is so."
"When I was selling oil, it was eighty-four gwan every three days. At that rate, it would take one hundred twenty-eight days."
Bern did not answer.
That evening, a letter came from Seid.
It was from Hanan Bek. Just a few lines on a single sheet.
> *I heard that you have regained your standing.
> The coming-of-age ceremony is in the third week of October. The workshop receives its cloth eight weeks before that.
> So the dye must arrive eight weeks before as well.
> Today is the twenty-first of August.*
Rine folded down her fingers.
"Uncle. Eight weeks before that — when is that?"
"...It has already passed."
"It has passed?"
"Eight weeks before the third week of October is the third week of August. Today is the fourth week."
Rine set the letter down.
"Then it is too late this year."
"This year, it is too late."
Rine picked the letter back up. She read the last line once more.
"Uncle. But if Uncle Hanan knew that, why did he send this?"
Bern took the letter and looked at it.
"...I do not know."
Rine looked out the window. The sun was setting.
"A letter sent just to say it is too late does not take four days to arrive."
