Siddhartha looked at the monk, and joy leapt up in him. "Govinda!" he said. "Govinda, is it you?"

The monk started. He looked hard at the man before him — a man in fine, if travel-stained, clothes, with the soft hands of a rich merchant. He did not know him at all. "You know my name," he said slowly. "But forgive me — I do not know you, sir."

"I am Siddhartha," he said, laughing softly. "Your friend Siddhartha, from long ago. We left our fathers' houses together. We were Samanas together. We heard the Buddha together, on the morning our roads parted."

Govinda's eyes went wide. "Siddhartha! It is you." He shook his head in wonder. "I would never have known you. You look like a rich man now." Then, more carefully: "Are you well, my friend? I found you sleeping by the river, alone, in a dangerous place. I sat to watch over you, so no harm would come to a sleeping man. I am glad I stayed. But — how do you come to be here, dressed like this, sleeping in the dirt?"

Siddhartha smiled, and did not try to explain it all. "I have walked a long road since we parted," he said. "I have been many things, Govinda. A Samana, a merchant, a rich man, a fool. And now I am a seeker again, with nothing — which is, I think, exactly what I ought to be."

Govinda did not fully understand, but he did not press. He had his own road, and his brother monks were waiting. The two friends spoke a little longer, of small things and old memories. Then Govinda rose to go.

"May you find what you are looking for," Govinda said.

"We have said that to each other before," Siddhartha answered gently. "Go well, Govinda."

He watched his friend walk away up the path, until the yellow robe was gone among the trees. Then he turned back to the water. It was the same river he had crossed as a young man — the river that had carried him into the world and, now, had caught him at the end of his fall.

Siddhartha smiled. He would not leave this river again.
