Many years later, an old monk came to the river crossing.

He was tired and gray, and he had walked a very long way. All his life he had followed the Buddha's path, faithfully, humbly. And yet, in his heart, he was still searching. He had heard that a wise old ferryman lived at this crossing — a man some people called a holy man — and he had come hoping for a word that might, at last, give him rest.

The ferryman rowed him across. Halfway over, the monk spoke.

"You are old, and you have the look of a seeker," he said. "May I ask you something, honored one? I have searched my whole life, and I have not found peace. I am an old man now. Can you give me anything — a word, a teaching — to help me before I die?"

The ferryman smiled at him, a slow and gentle smile.

"You search too hard, perhaps," the ferryman said. "A man who searches too hard sees only the thing he is searching for. He cannot find what is right in front of him, because his eyes are always somewhere else."

The old monk frowned. There was something in that voice. Something in that smile. He leaned closer, peering at the ferryman's calm, weathered face in the fading light — and slowly his eyes went wide.

"Is it truly you, Siddhartha? You became... a ferryman?"
