"This is a case we are required to report."

The doctor said it while closing the chart.

"If there are signs of long **confinement**, we have to tell the investigating authorities."

"Doctor."

Sujin spoke in a low voice.

"If you report it now, they will know before anyone else does."

"...I am not sure what you mean."

"The one who kept her locked up is an executive at the biggest company in this country. Before the report is even taken and the investigation starts, the evidence will all be erased first."

For a moment the doctor said nothing.

"Once we are ready, we will go there ourselves. Only until then."

"...Ma'am, that is not a matter for me to decide."

"And the patient's own wishes?"

Moyeon, who had been sitting on the bed, spoke for the first time.

"I do not want to report it."

The voice was small, but it was clear.

"For now."

The doctor looked back and forth between the two of them, and in the end wrote something on the chart.

"I will respect the patient's wishes. In return, I will keep a record of the treatment."

"Please do that."

Sujin answered. That was better, if anything. It was a record that would become evidence later.

"She has to be admitted."

The doctor said it firmly.

Just as Sujin was about to answer, Moyeon, from beside her, spoke first.

"I do not want to."

"Ma'am, your condition right now..."

"I do not want to be here."

Moyeon's hand was gripping the bed sheet. Her body trembled, very slightly.

Sujin looked at that hand.

*White walls, a narrow room, a door closing.*

It seemed the hospital room looked no different from that place.

"Doctor."

Sujin stepped in.

"We will do it on an **outpatient** basis. I will bring her in myself."

"Ma'am, in her condition right now..."

"I will stay with her. I will come every day. If it is needed, I will bring in a **caregiver** as well."

For a moment the doctor looked back and forth between the two of them. Then the doctor let out a short sigh.

"...For now I will write a week's prescription. Come back in three days."

> | Location | Central Seoul, a high floor |

The elevator doors opened.

When Sujin opened the front door, Moyeon stopped at the **threshold**.

The whole front of the living room was glass. The night view of Seoul lay spread out just as it was.

Moyeon stood frozen where she was and looked at the window.

*Ah.*

Only then did Sujin realize.

It was the first outside view Moyeon had seen in five years.

Moyeon walked slowly toward the window. There was no strength in her legs and she staggered. Sujin put out a hand to hold her up, but Moyeon shook her head.

She walked on her own.

She stood in front of the window and laid her palm against the glass.

And after standing like that for a long while, she spoke, low.

"...This place is high up too."

It took Sujin a few seconds to catch what those words meant.

It was a penthouse. Glass across the whole front, the top floor, a home you could reach only by elevator.

In its structure it was no different from the place where, five years before, Moyeon had been shut in.

"...Should we move?"

Sujin asked.

Moyeon shook her head.

"No. The door here does not lock."

Then she looked out the window again.

Sujin boiled water in the kitchen.

*That is strange.*

Five years before it had been the other way around. She had been the one who went in and out of that person's home with documents, and who fetched water for her in that kitchen.

Now she was in her own home, boiling water to give to that person.

*The whole thing has flipped over.*

She picked up the cup and went out to the living room. Moyeon was still standing by the window.

"Sit down. You should not be standing."

Moyeon turned around slowly.

"...Where is this?"

"My home."

"Your home, Sujin?"

"Yes."

Moyeon looked around the living room. It was a wide, clean space with expensive things in it.

"How..."

She could not get the rest out.

Sujin did not answer. Now was not the time for that explanation.

"Drink the water."

She held out the cup. Moyeon took it with both hands. Her hands shook, and a little of the water spilled.

Without a word, Sujin held that hand steady from underneath.

Night fell.

Sujin gave up one of the bedrooms and decided to sleep in the study herself.

"Call me if you need anything."

"...Yes."

Moyeon gave a short answer.

As Sujin was about to close the door, a voice came from behind her.

"Um."

"Yes."

"The door — could you leave it open a little?"

Sujin's hand stopped.

"...Yes. I will."

She came out with the door left half open.

She sat down on the living room sofa. Sleep did not come.

*I want to ask.*

The questions she had spent five years getting ready had filled her up to the throat.

Why Moyeon had done it. What that night had been. Why she had struck Sujin's hand away.

*But if I ask now.*

Sujin looked out the window.

That person had only just looked out a window for the first time in five years. She was someone who had to take a single glass of water with both hands.

*If I ask now, I think she will break apart.*

Sujin closed her eyes.

*Just a little. Let me wait just a little longer.*

Three o'clock in the morning.

Sujin opened her eyes at a strange sound.

It came from the bedroom. The sound of low sobbing.

Sujin went to the door. Through the half-open gap she could see Moyeon sitting on the bed. Knees drawn up, back pressed flat against the wall — that was the posture.

*That posture.*

It was exactly the posture she had seen in the basement.

Sujin opened the door a little wider.

"Can you not sleep?"

Moyeon lifted her head.

"...The bed is too wide."

It was a small voice.

"Over there it was only this much."

Moyeon drew the narrow width in the air with her hands.

Sujin could not say anything.

"It is strange, is it not. I held on for five years because I wanted to get out, and now that I am out, wide spaces **frighten** me."

Moyeon smiled faintly. That smiling face hurt more.

Sujin went into the room and sat down on the floor beside the bed.

"What are you doing."

"I will stay here."

"..."

"Only until you fall asleep."

Moyeon said nothing.

After a long while, a hand came out from under the blanket. It was a hand hanging loose toward the floor.

Sujin took that hand in hers.

Neither of them said a word. The things to be asked and the things to be answered were piled up like a mountain, but that night simply passed like that.
