"Daniel."

"Daniel.

**Chloe Lee — Executive Chef / AURA Group Sydney**

"Daniel.

English

Chloe passed on the news from head office and laid a light hand on Daniel's shoulder.

The warmth between the two of them was enough to catch every eye in the open kitchen.

Thock! Thock— Thock—!

A vicious noise burst from the bench in the sauce section.

The chef's knife in Hangyeol's hand was coming down on the board without **mercy**. The carrot and celery mirepoix was being crushed to half its usual size.

The kitchen staff turned to look at Hangyeol all at once.

Hangyeol paid the stares no attention and drove the knife down with eyes gone cold. The staff member at the next section swallowed dryly at that vicious edge.

Liam took a quiet step back.

"Is that ever going to be finished today."

Chloe narrowed her eyes and looked from Hangyeol to Daniel and back.

"That one looks like he's got a **grudge** against the vegetables today?"

Daniel's reaction was not what anyone would have expected.

Any other day he would have kept a tight hold on private feeling and rough handling in his kitchen. But right now his amber eyes were colored with satisfaction and mischief.

The sharp jealousy and the rough **possessiveness** Hangyeol was throwing at him were not unwelcome. They were a thrill.

It had been four days. Four days since that man had thrown anything at all his way.

"Daniel."

Chloe said, turning her glass.

"That's because of me, isn't it?"

"......"

"And you're not stopping it, because you like it."

Daniel looked at Chloe.

Chloe was smiling, but her eyes missed nothing.

"I think I saw this face on you once before, three years ago."

Daniel set his glass down. Then he fixed his eyes on the kitchen.

"Stop your knife work for a minute and follow me to the office. Han."

Daniel went to the office first, and Hangyeol followed him in like a man with a score to settle.

Click—

The moment the door shut, Daniel caught Hangyeol by the waist and pressed him between the wooden desk and his own body.

"Were you planning to take my head off instead of the vegetables on that board, Han?"

There was playfulness in his low voice, and an easy confidence under it.

Hangyeol pushed hard at his chest, breathing fast.

"Hands off."

"So you're angry."

"I'm not angry."

"The carrot didn't look like it."

Hangyeol looked up at him. The hand that had been pushing took hold of his shirt.

"Who is she."

"Chloe Lee. Executive chef at head office, and a major shareholder."

"Not that."

"We worked three seasons together. Four years ago."

*Four years ago.*

The strength went out of Hangyeol's hand.

"......Then she knows about what happened back then too."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Hangyeol."

"You haven't said one word for four days."

Hangyeol let go of the shirt.

"About the file. Whether you're going to write it again or not. Whether the twenty-six days are just going to go by like this."

"......"

"What I'm angry about isn't her."

The office went quiet.

Daniel slowly took his hand off Hangyeol's waist.

"If I write the listing again, you lose."

"You said that last week too."

"It's true this week too."

"Then I'll lose."

Hangyeol said.

"The answer is the same however many times you ask."

Daniel looked at him. He looked for a long time.

And the moment he opened his mouth, a knock came from outside the door.

Knock, knock.

"Daniel. Sorry to **interrupt**."

It was Chloe.

The door opened.

Chloe did not come in. She stood with one hand on the door frame and looked the two of them over. Her eyes stayed half a beat on the rumpled front of Hangyeol's shirt and moved on.

"I'm on a flight tonight. I only came to say goodbye."

"I'll see you out."

Daniel started to walk out, and Chloe raised a hand to stop him.

"No. Not you."

She turned her head toward Hangyeol.

"You're Hangyeol Seo, right?"

Hangyeol nodded before he knew what he was doing.

"Is English all right? Or should I go slowly."

"......It's fine."

"Good."

Chloe took a business card out of the inside pocket of her suit. Then she held it out, pinched between two fingers.

"I read the audit report. The duck breast on day three is written up as a cooperative response between sections."

"......Yes."

"That wasn't cooperation between sections. You put your hand into someone else's section."

Hangyeol's breath stopped.

The whole kitchen had passed over it in three seconds. Mackenzie had not seen it, and the report did not say so either.

"You can tell from the record. I did that job for six years."

Chloe smiled. It was not a **scolding** face.

"Keeping someone who makes that call in the sauce section is a waste."

"Chloe."

Daniel said it low.

Chloe did not look back.

"Call me. Any time."

The card was laid in Hangyeol's hand.

**Chloe Lee — Executive Chef / AURA Group Sydney**

"There's a trial in Sydney next week. One spot, and nobody has been picked for it yet."

Chloe took her hand off the door frame.

"The conditions of the listing are already out. They weren't written to fit any one person."

The air in the office went cold.

Hangyeol raised his head. Chloe was looking at Daniel.

"Daniel. I haven't done anything yet."

"......"

"So don't make that face."

Chloe turned. Then, two steps into the corridor, she turned only her head back.

"Ah, Han."

"Yes."

"I didn't see Daniel's name in that report."

Hangyeol's hand stopped on the card.

"I saw yours."

The sound of her shoes faded down the corridor.

Left in the room were the two of them, a file with an empty signature line, and one card lying in Hangyeol's hand.
