English
Then one evening her husband came home looking proud. He was holding a large envelope.
"Here," he said. "This is for you."
She tore the paper open quickly and pulled out a printed card. It said:
> **Invitation**
> Request · The Minister of Education and Madame Georges Ramponneau request the honour of the company of Monsieur and Madame Loisel
> Place · At the Ministry
> Date · Monday, January 18th
> Time · Evening
Her husband hoped she would be delighted. Instead she threw the invitation onto the table, annoyed, and said quietly:
"What do you want me to do with that?"
"But my dear, I thought you would be pleased. You never go out, and this is a chance — a wonderful one! It was very hard to get. Everyone wants one, and they don't give many to clerks. You will see all the important people there."
She looked at him with angry eyes and said impatiently:
"And what do you want me to wear?"
He had not thought about that. He said awkwardly:
"Well... the dress you wear to the theatre. It looks very nice to me..."
He stopped, shocked and confused, because he saw that his wife was crying. Two large tears were running slowly from the corners of her eyes down to the corners of her mouth. He stammered:
"What's wrong? What is it?"
With great effort she controlled her feelings. She wiped her wet cheeks and answered in a calm voice:
"Nothing. It's just that I have no dress, so I can't go to this party. Give your invitation to a colleague whose wife has better clothes than I do."
He was very upset. He said:
"Let's see, Mathilde. How much would a proper dress cost — something very simple, something you could wear again on other occasions?"
She thought for a few seconds. She was doing the calculation, and also thinking about how much she could ask for without her careful husband saying no immediately and crying out in shock.
At last she answered slowly:
"I don't know exactly, but I think I could manage with four hundred francs."
He turned a little pale. That was exactly the amount he had saved to buy a gun. He had planned to go hunting the next summer with some friends near Nanterre, where they shot larks on Sundays.

But he said:
"All right. I'll give you four hundred francs. But try to get a beautiful dress."
