English
The day of the party came closer, and Madame Loisel seemed sad, worried, and anxious. Her dress was ready, though. One evening her husband said to her:
"What's wrong? You've been strange for three days now."
And she answered:
"It bothers me that I don't have a single jewel, not one stone, nothing to wear. I'll look poor. I would almost rather not go to this party at all."
He said:
"You can wear fresh flowers. They're very fashionable this time of year. For ten francs you can get two or three beautiful roses."
She was not convinced.
"No... there is nothing more humiliating than looking poor among rich women."
But her husband cried out:
"How silly you are! Go and see your friend Madame Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewels. You know her well enough to do that."
She gave a cry of joy.
"That's true. I never thought of it."
The next day she went to her friend's house and told her about her problem. Madame Forestier went to her mirrored wardrobe, took out a large box, brought it over, opened it, and said to Madame Loisel:
"Choose, my dear."
First she saw bracelets, then a pearl necklace, then a Venetian cross made of gold and precious stones, beautifully made. She tried the jewels on in front of the mirror. She hesitated. She could not decide to take them off, to give them back. She kept asking:
"Don't you have anything else?"
"Yes, of course. Keep looking. I don't know what you'll like."
Suddenly, in a black satin box, she found a magnificent diamond necklace. Her heart began to beat with wild desire. Her hands were shaking as she picked it up. She fastened it around her throat, over her high-necked dress, and stood there staring at herself, lost in wonder.
Then she asked, hesitating, full of worry:
"Can you lend me this? Only this?"
"Yes, of course."
She threw her arms around her friend's neck, kissed her wildly, and then ran away with her treasure.
