English

She sat with the warehouse door open.

It was not that she had nothing to sell. It was that she could not sell it. Once certification is suspended, no goods can go on the stall. Even if they did, the buyer could not get a receipt.

Rine spread out a sheet of paper. At the top, she wrote "What I Can Do."

"Uncle. Tell me everything that needs certification."

"Stall sales, warehouse removal, drawing up contracts, loans between trading houses."

Rine wrote down the four and crossed each one off, one by one.

"Then what does not need certification?"

Bern thought for a moment.

"...A letter."

"A letter?"

"A letter is not a document. It is not subject to certification."

Rine wrote 'letter' at the bottom of the page. Below that, it was blank.

"Uncle. Right now, the one thing I can do is a letter."

At the union registry's reading table, the roster was chained down.

It could not be taken away, so it had to be copied out. Sera wrote down the trading house names, and Rine wrote down the locations.

Of the twelve full members, they left out the two in Rahel. Ten remained. Six in Seid, four in the capital.

"Seid is four days one way, the capital is six," Bern said. "If a reply comes, that is eight days for Seid, twelve for the capital."

"I will send all ten."

"**Courier** fare is two gwan a letter. That is twenty gwan."

"I will send them."

She wrote the letters in the office. Partway through the first sheet, Rine's hand stopped.

"Uncle. What am I supposed to write here?"

"...I do not know."

"Is it not in the rulebook?"

"There is no set procedure for a request for guarantee. There is no form either. It is because it is a favor to ask."

Rine took out a fresh sheet of paper.

"Then I will make one."

What Rine made was not a letter. It was a document.

She drew out columns and filled them in. Sera checked the numbers beside her.

> **REQUEST FOR GUARANTEE**
> *Drawn up: 2 August · Drawn up by: Rine Haran (Haran Trading House R-2291)*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Request | One guarantor for reinstatement application |
> | House assets | One warehouse · four wagons · 909 silver gwan |
> | Debt | Rendal Company, 4,200 silver gwan (repayment date 30 November) |
> | Recent trade | 16 July dye, 1,860 geun · 3,348 silver gwan |
> | | 21 July lamp oil, 80 bottles · 109 silver gwan |
> | Current status | **Document re-examination in progress · certification suspended** |
> | Expected end date | **Not set** |

"Miss. Why do you write in the re-examination?"

"If I do not write it?"

"...Some of the ten might sign without knowing."

Rine pointed her finger at that field.

"Someone who signs without knowing will take it back once they know. Then I would be refused twice."

Bern said no more.

It took Rine all night to finish the ten sheets. Two candles burned down.

At the end, she added one line by hand. It was outside the columns.

> *This is all I can do right now.*

She waited eight days.

Yona repaired the two broken wagons. There was no money to replace the axles, so he moved parts from the two **sound** wagons and made one. There were three wagons now.

"Three is enough," Yona said. "There is no load for a fourth wagon anyway."

Sera was filling in the missing quarterly ledger. It was less filling it in than marking which places were empty.

"How many columns are empty?"

"One hundred and nineteen."

Martin stayed only at the front of the warehouse. He did not come to the back.

Rine took a label out of her apron pocket. It was one she had stuck on crooked and then peeled off. The Haran Trading House name was printed on it.

She looked at it for a long while, then put it back.

On the eighth day, an answer came.

Three of the six in Seid replied. All three were a single sheet of paper.

> **REPLY**
>
> We confirm receipt of your house's request.
> Per Union Circular 7-22, a guarantee for a house under document re-examination is
> **not recommended.**
> We therefore decline the request.

Rine laid the three side by side.

"Uncle. These three sheets — even the words are **identical**."

"...That is so."

"Who told them to?"

"No one," Bern said, picking up the first sheet. "There is a **circular** number written on it. It is a document the union sent around to every member. Three people looked at the same document and copied the same sentence."

"Word about us had already gone around?"

"Once a re-examination begins, it is circulated. That is the rule."

Rine pointed her finger at the circular number.

"It says here not recommended. It does not say do not."

"That is so."

"So it is fine to sign after all."

"It is fine."

Rine stacked the three sheets together.

"So it is not that they cannot. It is that they will not."

Bern did not answer.

The other three gave no answer. The four in the capital — their date had not yet come.

On the morning of the twelfth day, a wagon stopped in front of the warehouse.

It had not come from the capital. It was from the road to Seid.

Hanan Bek stepped down. Dust had settled on his coat.

"I received your letter."

"...You could have just sent a reply."

"A reply takes eight days. Coming here takes four."

Rine brought him into the warehouse. The only place to sit was a crate.

Hanan sat on the crate.

"Let me ask you. That dye — can it still be had?"

"You already bought everything we had in the warehouse."

"Not your warehouse," Hanan said, resting his arm on his knee. "Southern indigo, three years old. How many people know that it holds color better than the new kind?"

"...How many is that?"

"There are two people I know of. You and me."

Rine looked at him.

"Then it is not that the goods have no value. It is that no one knows the value."

"That is so."

"Will you sign as **guarantor**?"

"There is a condition."

"Tell me."

"From now on, sell me first any southern indigo the Haran Trading House gets. The price will follow the market at the time."

Rine thought for a moment.

"I hear you sell it at four gwan a geun."

Hanan's hand came off his knee.

"...Who told you that?"

"Uncle Rendal. He told me the same evening I sold it at one gwan eighty a geun."

"..."

"So what I sold at one gwan eighty, you sold at four gwan. On fifteen sacks, you kept more than four thousand gwan."

"That is so."

"And knowing that, you still came to me."

Hanan stood up from the crate.

"I said the price would follow the market at the time. If two people know the market, then two people set it."

"Then next time, could I be the one to call four gwan?"

"You could."

"And you would still sign for me."

"I will sign."

Hanan did not take long to write his name on the guarantee.

> **GUARANTEE FOR REINSTATEMENT (1 OF 2)**
> *Drawn up: 6 August*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | House guaranteed | Haran Trading House (R-2291) |
> | Guarantor | Seid Cloth Guild |
> | Signing officer | Hanan Bek |
> | Scope of guarantee | The whole reinstatement application |
> | Remarks | Signed with awareness of Circular 7-22 |

Bern read the last line twice.

"Why do you write this line. If you did not, you could later say you did not know."

"If I wrote it knowing, and then said I did not know, that would be worse."

Hanan walked toward the wagon. Rine followed him out.

"Uncle. Let me ask you one thing."

"Yes."

"If I cannot repay, you have to pay in my place. Four thousand two hundred gwan."

"I know."

"That is more than the four thousand gwan you kept."

Hanan climbed onto the wagon.

"The sum is right."

"If the sum is right, why do it?"

Hanan took up the reins. He left without answering.

Rine came into the office holding the guarantee.

Her father's ledger lay open on the desk. It was where Sera had left off marking the empty columns.

Rine set the guarantee down beside the ledger.

Then her hand stopped.

Hanan's signature was there. And beside it, in a line from the ledger three years back, was a supplier's signature.

It was the same hand.
