English

"One person is left."

Rine set the guarantee form on the table. Beside it, she opened a copy of the roll.

"There are two full members in Rahel. Doryun Company and Rendal Company. What about asking Uncle Rendal?"

Bern opened the rulebook. He turned pages for a long while.

"That cannot be done."

"Why?"

Bern put his finger on a line.

"Article 22. A creditor cannot be a debtor's **guarantor**."

"Why not?"

"Rendal Company is the house that is to receive four thousand two hundred gwan from you, miss. If that house stands as guarantor, and you cannot repay, then Rendal Company would be repaying Rendal Company. That is not a guarantee."

Rine looked at the two lines on the roll. A line was struck through one of them.

"Then it is Doryun Company alone."

"One."

"The one who pulled my wooden tag when I could not make a thousand gwan in ten days."

"That is so."

Rine folded the guarantee form.

"I will go today."

Doryun Company's loading yard was quieter than last time.

There were only three carts, and the porters sat against the wall.

Cassian was talking with a clerk at the bottom of the stairs. He looked up as Rine came near. He looked, but he did not stop talking.

"...Then we cannot get the Seid carts in this week."

"Get them in. Next week the price drops."

Rine stopped three steps away.

"Uncle."

Cassian kept looking at the clerk.

"I said get them in. If my brother asks, tell him you checked with me."

"Excuse me."

"And the axle on that cart down there needs changing. I told you last time."

The clerk glanced at Rine once. Cassian did not.

Rine stood where she was. She did not move her feet.

A porter passed by and brushed her shoulder. He did not apologize. He seemed not to have seen her.

It took twenty minutes for the conversation to end.

After the clerk left, Cassian turned around.

"You came?"

"I came twenty minutes ago."

"I know."

"..."

"You waited. So it must be urgent." Cassian sat down on the steps. "Talk."

Rine held out the guarantee form.

"The reinstatement application needs two full members to guarantee it. I have one already. I need you to sign as the other one, Uncle."

Cassian took it and looked it over. He stopped at the line that read Seid Cloth Guild.

"Hanan signed it?"

"Yes."

"That old man." Cassian pushed the paper back. "No."

"Why?"

"A thousand gwan in ten days. I set the terms, and you did not make them."

"Certification was suspended. I could not sell a single day."

"So you did not make them."

"..."

"I said it before — if I let this go, that line disappears with it." Cassian looked at Rine. "If I sign now, then the terms I set last time never happened. That makes me someone who cannot even hold to his own terms."

"Set the terms again."

Cassian raised his eyebrows.

"What?"

"A thousand gwan in ten days. Let us do it again. Once certification is lifted."

"When does certification get lifted."

"I don't know. It's not set."

"Then it's not terms."

Rine folded the guarantee form, then unfolded it.

"Then what should I give you?"

"Nothing."

"I have nothing to sell and only nine hundred and nine gwan. I know that much myself. So just tell me what I should give you."

Cassian did not answer.

The clerk came back out from inside the loading yard. He was holding papers in his hand.

"Young master. This needs the eldest young master's approval."

"Leave it there."

"It needs to be received today."

"I said leave it."

The clerk set the papers on the steps and left.

Rine looked at the papers. The signature line at the bottom was empty.

Rine lifted her eyes from the papers.

"Uncle."

"What."

"Can you not write your name on those papers?"

Cassian turned the papers face down.

"..."

"Last time, you filed my stall papers by **proxy**, and they were rejected. The officer said a power of **attorney** had to be attached."

"So."

"Doryun Company is a full member, but the full member is the house, not you, Uncle. The one who signs is someone else."

Cassian stood up from the steps.

"Stop."

"So you cannot write your name on papers either, Uncle."

The loading yard went quiet. The porters got up from against the wall and moved toward the carts.

Cassian looked at Rine. He was not smiling.

"The signing officer in our house is the eldest."

"..."

"I am twenty, and the third son. Pulling wooden tags and counting carts here is my job. There is no place for my name on papers."

"Then what about the thousand gwan in ten days last time? You were the one who set that."

"That was renting out a spot, and I manage the spots. A guarantee is different. A guarantee is something the house stands, not me."

Rine unfolded the guarantee form she had folded.

"Then you were never going to be able to sign, from the start."

"That's right."

"Then why did you start with the terms?"

Cassian was quiet for a moment.

"...Because it was less **embarrassing**."

Rine stood at the bottom of the steps. Last time she had climbed two steps up. Today she did not.

"Can I go to your brother, Uncle?"

"He will not meet you."

"Why?"

"My brother does not meet people. He only takes papers." Cassian picked up the papers on the steps. "He only looks at papers, upstairs. If something needs approval, it goes up like that, and when an answer comes down, that ends it. It has been two months since I even talked to him."

"Only papers?"

"Yes."

Rine repeated the words to herself once more.

"Uncle. That works in my **favor**."

"What?"

"I cannot meet people. I am thirteen, so no one will meet me." Rine put the guarantee form in her pocket. "But I can send in papers."

Cassian stood there holding the papers.

"What would you send him."

"I don't know. I haven't decided yet."

"..."

"But let me ask you one thing. When your brother looks at papers, which field does he look at first?"

Cassian did not answer.

Rine walked toward the loading yard door. Bern was waiting one step inside it.

Before she stepped outside, a voice came from behind.

"The source field."

Rine turned around.

"My brother looks at the source field first." Cassian set the papers back down on the steps. "If that's empty, he does not read the rest."
