English
While moving the oil crates to the back of the warehouse, she pushed a crate by the wall aside.
Sera was crouched in front of it, marking each crate's corner with a short chalk line.
"What are you doing?"
"I am counting to see if my column matches the ledger."
"Does it match?"
"Six." Sera counted again. "Six is right."
"Six of what?"
"Empty crates. Six on the inventory sheet, and six here."
"Then it matches, doesn't it."
"It matches the inventory sheet. But it is not in last quarter's ledger at all."
Rine went over to the **crates**. A brand mark was burned into a corner of each.
"This brand is not ours."
"It is not."
"So six crates which belong to someone else are sitting in our warehouse, not even in the ledger."
"Uncle Martin. How long have these crates been here?"
Martin shifted the lamp to his other hand.
"...I could not say. The master came to the warehouse often in his last three months. He came at night too."
"What did he do, coming at night?"
"I was not here at night."
"Was anything different when you came in the morning?"
"..."
"Just tell me when these crates came in."
"I do not know."
Martin took up the lamp and moved off.
She opened the stall at West quarter, No. 47.
Without being asked, Bern had ordered eighty labels from the print shop.
"Miss. Putting on a new label breaks no rule. But someone may ask about that shop's name later."
"If they ask, I will tell them then."
Bern said no more.
Rine untied the bundle. It was paper printed with the name Haran Trading House. She mixed flour paste and brushed it on.
She stuck one on crooked. She peeled it off. She stuck it on again. She did not throw away the peeled label but put it in her apron pocket.
Pasting eighty labels took two hours.
Yona stood the bottles up beside her and lined them into rows.
"That label costs two pun apiece."
Rine did not answer.
The first customer came at midday.
"Whose is this?"
"Haran's."
"How much."
"About one gwan forty a bottle."
The customer held a bottle up to the sun and bought two.
In three days all eighty bottles were gone. It came to a hundred nine gwan.
On the last evening she filed the report.

"Uncle. I cannot fill in the **supplier**'s registration number."
"That shop has no registration," Bern said. "A small shop does not need to register. So there is no number to write at all."
Rine filed it with the field left empty. The officer said nothing.
"I could not write where the goods came from, and no one is asking."
"...That is so."
At the union registry's reading table, the roll was chained down.
Bern opened it to the Rahel district section.

"Twelve?"
"Twelve. Ten of them are in Seid or the capital."
"Can I not just send a letter?"
"It is four days to Seid one way. Even with a reply, that is eight days."
"Then there are only two full members I can meet in person."
Rine looked at the two remaining lines. The Doryun Company and the Rendal Company.
"One offered half a gwan for my dye. One broke down our door. And I have to get both of them."
"You must get both."
Rine put her finger on the line below. Haran Trading House was still printed in the associate member column.
"Our name is still here."
"The roll is reprinted every quarter."
Rine did not close the roll. She left it open and stood up.
The next day someone came from the license office. He told her to come to the office in back.
Kyle pushed the wax-seal stamp aside and held out a sheet of paper.
"Notice of officer assignment for your reinstatement application."
"Kyle Roude." Rine read the name. "You are reviewing our **application**?"
"That is so."
"You are the one who accepted the paper that erased us, too."
"I accepted it on the morning of the fourteenth. That afternoon I approved your stall's **certification**."
"Is it allowed for someone like that to review our application?"
"If I file for recusal, I am removed from the case."
"Will you, then?"
Kyle took a form from the stamp drawer and set it on the desk. It was printed as a recusal request.
He did not pick up the pen.
"If you do not write it, do you stay in charge?"
"That is so."
"Is that not risky for you?"
"There is no field on the form for that question."
The recusal request stayed on the desk until Rine left.
She set the abacus down at the back of the **warehouse**.
"I paid twenty-five gwan and took in a hundred nine."
"Eighty-four gwan left over," Bern said.
"Eighty-four gwan in three days."
Rine was sliding a bead on the abacus when her hand stopped.
Only the spot where the six crates had stood was clean. A thin layer of dust covered the ground around it.
Martin came with a sorghum-stalk broom. He pushed dust into the spot. It was not the motion of sweeping away but of covering over.
"Uncle. Why is that—"
Rine broke off. She turned her eyes back to the abacus.
"Uncle. What do we sell next?"
"...I will go through the warehouse again tomorrow."
"Is there anything left in the warehouse to sell?"
"...There is not."
"Then the oil was a one-time sale. We earned three days' worth, and there is nothing after it."
Rine pushed every bead to the left. The lamp hanging from the beam swung once.
The Doryun Company stood at this end of the river.
A brass nameplate was set into the doorpost. The sound of carts came from inside.
Rine stood at the door. Eighty-four gwan sat in her pocket.
"Are you going in?"
"..."
"What do I say once I am inside?"
"You ask him to give a guarantee."
"How do I even bring that up? I have nothing to sell — I would just be asking."
"...I do not know that either."
Rine looked at the nameplate for a long while. Then she turned away.
Bern brushed a piece of straw off Rine's shoulder.
On the way back she took out the union license.
> Valid: 14 July – 21 July
"Uncle. What is today's date?"
"The twenty-second."
"This ended yesterday. The last day we sold oil was the last day we could use that spot."
"That is so."
"And Cassian Doryun. He said he would come again next week — that is tomorrow."
