English
Ten carts had come into the Doryun Company loading yard.
Each load bore the company's brand. When porters emptied a cart, the next one pulled into its place.
Cassian Doryun stood beside them. He spotted Rine first.
"You sold oil, I heard."
"...How do you know that?"
"Six of our stalls are on that row." He walked closer. "You peeled off the fallen labels and put your own house's on, they say."
Rine did not answer.
Bern stopped one step inside the yard gate. He went no further and spoke from there.
"Third young master of the Doryun Company. Haran put a Haran label on goods that Haran bought. That is not a rule **violation**."
"I know it's not a violation. I do it too." Cassian waved a hand. "Our house is big enough — nothing comes back on us."
"What about me?"
"..."
"The shop owner who sold me the oil told me nothing comes back on him because his shop is small. You say nothing comes back on you because your house is big." Rine looked at him. "We are neither small nor big."
Cassian looked at Rine for a moment, then asked something else.
"What did you bring today."
"...Nothing. I have nothing to sell."
Cassian reached toward where a sack would be. There was no sack to shake. He put his outstretched hand straight into his pocket.
Two attendants stood half a step behind him. When he stopped, they stopped too.
"Then what will you win with today."
Rine counted the carts from one side of the loading yard.
The loads bulged out halfway past their covers. The covers were doubled, and the knots were tied down inside the cart bed.
"Ten of them. How much does each one carry?"
"Six hundred geun, if it were grain." Bern set down his scale weight. "That is not grain."
Yona was peering under a cart. He crouched by a wheel and touched the axle with his hand.
"One axle alone is thirty gwan."
Rine looked at the axle. The wheel beside it was wood banded in iron. The axle was pale.
"Is it new?"
"All ten are new," Bern said.
"Just the axles come to three hundred gwan." Rine folded her fingers, then opened them. "I worked three days and earned eighty-four gwan. Not even the price of three of those axles."
"An axle wears with every turn," Bern said. "If all ten were changed for new ones, it means they turned that much this **quarter**."
"This place is bigger than I thought."
"One digit bigger."
A porter set down a load and marked the list. The list was as long as Rine's forearm.
At the far end of the yard was a stone stair. An iron ring was set into it, with a coiled rope beside it.
Cassian stood at the foot of the stair.
"Miss. Let us keep to business today. The guarantee — we could arrange another time to—"
"There is no next time."
Bern said no more.
Rine climbed two steps. That brought their eyes level.
Once up, she spoke.
"Give us your guarantee."
"What?"
"Our reinstatement application needs the guarantee of two full members. Be one of them."
"Why should I."
"..."
"On what terms."
"None. I have nothing to give you now."
Bern said nothing from the foot of the stair. Asking for a favor was in no rulebook.
"Do you know what a guarantee means?" Cassian said. "If you cannot pay, I pay. If your application falls through, my name falls through with it."
"I know."
"You know, and you ask anyway?"
"Yes."
"What do you think my father would say, if he knew."
"...I do not know."
"Neither do I. I have never asked him."
A cart passed below the stair. A wheel brushed the iron ring. A porter stopped his cart, glanced toward Cassian, then moved on.
Cassian looked at Rine. He had laughed a moment ago in the yard. He was not laughing now.
"If you mean to refuse, tell me now."
Cassian did not refuse. He nudged the coiled rope once with his foot.
Rine stayed standing on the stair.
"I will give you one of the inner stalls."
Cassian climbed one step up.
"Ten days. Make a thousand gwan on that spot, and I will give you the guarantee."
"A thousand gwan?"
"A thousand gwan."
Rine did the math.
"I earned eighty-four gwan in three days, so in ten days that would be about two hundred eighty gwan. A thousand is three and a half times that — more than everything I have now."
"That is the point of a **condition**."
From inside the yard came the sound of a name-tag being hung. Whenever a spot opened up, the tag was swapped. In there, a spot could change hands several times in a single day.
"What about the goods?"
"Find them yourself. You can buy from us, if you like. At the Doryun price."
"What is the Doryun price?"
"A high one."
"..."
"If you don't want it, forget it."
"I'll do it. But I am not borrowing that spot."
"What?"
"I will pay stall rent."
"Isn't that money wasted?"
"If I borrow it, it stays your spot. If I pay rent, it is mine for the ten days."
"How much will you pay."
"Fifty gwan."
Cassian laughed. It was the first time he had laughed out loud since coming into the yard.
"Fifty for ten days? Our inner stalls run two hundred gwan for ten days."
"Then I will use fifty gwan's worth."
Cassian turned. He took two steps. Then he stopped. He walked back to the stair and stood facing her.
"Fifty gwan. But if you ask me to lower it, you lose."
Rine nodded. She did not step down from the stair.
A clerk brought a document. It was the stall **lease**. A wax seal was pressed into the bottom.
It was a printed form. There were only three places to fill in by hand; everything else was already set in type.
The clerk put a finger beside the wax seal and read out the clause number first.
> **STALL LEASE**
> *Doryun Company*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Article 14 | Certification during the lease period is handled by the assigned officer |
> | Officer in charge | Roude |
> | Article 14, Section 4 | The lessee may not request a change of officer |
> | Article 14, Section 5 | The lessor may not request a change of officer, either |
> | Seal | Wax seal pressed at the bottom |
"Under Article 14, the assigned officer handles all certification during the lease period."
"Assigned? Can I not go to any license office I like?"
"No. Our company's stalls have their officer fixed in advance."
The clerk put a finger in the middle of the document.
> Officer in charge: Roude
"Officer Roude," Bern said.
The clerk did not look at Bern and read the next clause.
"Under Article 14, Section 4, the lessee cannot **request** a change of officer. Under Article 14, Section 5, neither can the lessor."
"The lessor, too?"
"Article 14, Section 5."
Rine looked at the document again. She rubbed a finger over the name. No ink came off.
"This name was not written by hand. It was printed. To print it, you have to set the type first. So this person was decided a long time ago."
"Article 14."
Rine looked toward Cassian. He had already turned and was walking back into the yard.
"Do you know that officer?"
Cassian did not stop. He only raised a hand once.
"You're not answering."
The clerk folded the document and pressed down on the wax seal. The wax was still soft, and a fingerprint mark was left in it.
