English
Yona was pulling nails from a crate lid.
"What are you doing?"
"The cart bed's support broke. This crate is the right height."
Rine sat down beside him. Yona pulled out one nail and set it on his palm.
"This nail is not for crates. It runs six gwan to the geun."
Rine took the nail and looked it over. The head was wide, the shaft long.
"Someone drove a six-gwan nail into an empty crate?"
Yona did not answer. He carried the nail toward the cart.
Rine finished lifting the lid.
Two of the six were not empty. Each held a single box bound in iron. Hardened sealing wax lay along the lid's seam.
"Uncle. What is this?"
"A preservation chest. A spell keeps what is inside from spoiling, and the box is sealed shut with wax. Break the wax, and the spell lifts — the price drops by half. So no one opens it. People just buy and sell it as it is."
"So people buy and sell it without knowing what's inside?"
"The sealing wax being unbroken is itself the value. One box runs about four hundred fifty gwan."
Rine shook the box. It made no sound.
A folded paper lay beside the box. Rine unfolded it.

"The twelfth of July." Rine tapped the date. "The same date as the collateral agreement Uncle Rendal brought. Father died on the ninth of July."
Martin had been holding up the crate lid. He spoke without letting go.
"That was not me."
They drew up the item list in the office.
Sera filled in the columns — goods, quantity, condition, estimated value.
"Together they come to nine hundred gwan. That is a hundred gwan short of a thousand."
"We can fill the hundred gwan with something else."
"The source field."
Rine's hand stopped.
"It is empty. There is nothing to write for where this box came from."
"..."
"Is it right that it is empty?"
Rine looked out the window. Two of the ten days Cassian had given her were gone.
"Is it right that it is empty?"
"I couldn't fill that field properly when I sold the oil either. Nothing happened then."
"That time you at least wrote the shop's name. This time there is no name to write at all."
"Write 'See attachment.' We can just attach the deposit receipt."
"The deposit receipt has no depositor listed."
"My father's signature is there." Rine looked at Bern. "Uncle. Does the deposit receipt need to be certified too?"
"A deposit receipt is not a contract, but a **receipt**. It is not subject to certification. Attaching it breaks no rule."
"Then I'll attach it."
"But that date bothers me. Do not **attach** it. Leave the source field blank instead."
"If I leave it blank, they will just ask again why. Only eight days are left."
Bern said no more.
Sera did not draw a line through the source field. She did not write 'None' either. Beside the blank space, she wrote only 'See attachment.'

She pressed the blotting paper down. The ink did not smear.
"I'll file it tomorrow morning."
At the window, Kyle took the papers.
He turned every page, first to last. It took time.
Kyle split the papers into two stacks.
"Why split them?"
"One stack stays at the window. One goes inside."
"Is it rejected?"
"It is not rejected."
"Then it passed?"
"It was received."
"Is 'received' different from 'passed'?"
"Received means it was taken in. Passed means the review is finished."
Kyle wrote a receipt number on a wooden tag. He put the smaller stack in the drawer below the window. It was the side with the deposit receipt. The drawer had a lock on it.
"Why keep that one separate?"
"..."
Rine started to ask once more, then stopped.
"Uncle. Before, you counted up to three mistakes in my papers. Today you have not counted a single one."
"Today there are no mistakes."
"Then is that good?"
Kyle shut the drawer. The lock clicked shut.
"Certification will come within three days."
As she turned to leave, footsteps sounded behind her.
Cassian came up to the window. He had a stack of papers in hand.
"The stall sublease papers."
Kyle took them and turned the pages. He stopped on the third. He pulled out the rejection stamp.
"Article 14, Section 2. The sublessee's registration number is the one before **renewal**."
"That was the same problem last time."
"I rejected it last time too."
"This is the third time."
"The third time. And the **tenant**'s signature line is signed by proxy. A proxy signature needs a power of attorney attached."
"Why do you look at our papers three times over?"
"Doryun Company's papers get looked at three times."
Cassian laughed. Still laughing, he set a hand on the window ledge.
Rine stood between the two men. The paper passing between them was her own stall lease.
"Excuse me. That's the paper for my spot. Why aren't you asking me?"
"The tenant's signature line is empty," Kyle said. "You are a minor. You cannot stand as a party to this document."
"It is my spot."
"The spot is yours. On the papers, you are not the **party**."
Cassian picked the document back up.
"That's why we filed it by proxy."
"That is why it is rejected."
Rine did not take hold of the window ledge.
Leaving the license office, Rine turned toward the wall.
Beside the window, wooden tags with receipt numbers hung in a row.
Two of them bore Haran Trading House's number.
"Uncle. Why are there two for us?"
"One is for the stall certification."
"What's the other one?"
Bern looked at the tags for a long moment.
"It is in the rulebook. Two filings mean two tags go up. But in twenty years, I have never seen two tags for one house."
"So is that good or bad?"
"I do not know."
Bern stepped onto the bridge first, pressed one plank with his foot, then stepped aside. Rine walked out onto it.
"Three of the ten days are used. Seven are left."
She held up seven fingers and left them there a moment.
