English
It came upon him all at once, on a night like any other.
He had played dice until late, and won a great sum, and felt nothing. He had drunk wine, and felt nothing. He walked home through the sleeping city and stopped, sick to his soul. He was tired — tired in a way sleep could not cure. He was sick of the wine and the dice and the soft food. He was sick of the endless round of wanting and getting and wanting again. Most of all, he was sick of himself.
He went that night to Kamala's garden. They were together one last time, though only she would later understand it was the last. Afterward they lay in the dark, two tired people, and neither of them spoke of it.
That night, Siddhartha dreamed.
Kamala kept a small, rare songbird in a golden cage. In waking life it sang each morning. But in his dream the bird was silent. He went to the cage and found the little creature lying dead on the floor of it, stiff and cold. He took it out, held it a moment in his hand, and threw it away into the street.
And as it fell, a terrible fear ran through him. He felt that he had just thrown away everything good, everything living, everything that had ever mattered in him. The bird was his own soul, and it was dead, and he had cast it into the dust.
He woke with the dream still gripping his chest. And in that gray dawn, he understood what he had become.
He did not go back to sleep. He rose, and he walked out of Kamala's garden, and out of the city, and he did not tell a single soul. He left the house, the money, the fine clothes, all of it, behind him like a snake leaving its old skin. He walked into the forest, sick and hollow and free, with no plan but to get away from the life that was killing him.
Far away, when Kamala heard that Siddhartha was gone, she went to the golden cage where her songbird sang. She opened the little door, and she let the bird fly free. Then she rested a hand on her belly, and understood that she was carrying his child.
