English

Siddhartha walked into the forest, and he did not care where he went. He wanted only to be far from the city, far from Kamala, far from the man he had become.

At last, worn out, he came to a river. It was the same river he had crossed years ago, when he was young and full of hope, on his way to the city. How far away that young man seemed now.

He stopped at the water's edge. He was hollow. He had thrown away his childhood as a Brahmin, his years as a Samana, his hour with the Buddha, and now the long rich years in the city too. He had nothing left, and he was nothing. He could not go forward. He could not go back. He was so tired of himself that he could hardly stand.

He leaned out over the river. The water was smooth and green and deep, and it seemed to him like an open door. If he let himself fall, the water would close over him, and this sick, hateful self would be gone at last. The thought was almost sweet. He bent lower, ready to let go, longing for the end.

His own face looked up at him from the surface of the water — thin, worn, a stranger's face. He gazed at it the way a man looks at something he means to destroy.

And then something rose in him that he had not called for. From the deepest, oldest place in his soul — from before the city, before the Samanas, before all of it — something climbed up toward his lips.

Then, from somewhere deep inside, one word rose to his lips: "Om."
