Siddhartha did not stop to think. He took the other boat, crossed the river, and hurried after his son, down the road toward the city.
His heart was wild with fear. He pictured the boy alone on the road, the boy lost in the city, the boy in danger — and he walked faster and faster, calling his name.
He followed the road all the way to the city's edge. He came to the pleasure garden that had once been Kamala's, where he had first learned to want, a lifetime ago. He stood at its gate, worn out and aching, and he understood that he could go no further.
For what would he do if he found the boy? Drag him back to the river by force? Tie him to a life he hated? Standing there, he knew that he could not. His son did not want to be found. And a child cannot be loved into staying, any more than a bird can be kept by holding the cage door shut.
So Siddhartha turned around. Slowly, heavily, he walked back the long road to the river. Vasudeva was waiting on the far bank and rowed out to bring him home. The old man asked no questions. He only looked at his friend with such gentle understanding that Siddhartha almost wept.
In the days that followed, the wound only grew. He listened for the boy's step. He looked up whenever a traveler came to the crossing, hoping. The hut was too quiet now. His son had taken something with him when he left, and had left no address where it could ever be returned.
He came back alone. The wound did not close.
