English
After a week, they had lost all hope.
And Loisel, who looked five years older, said:
"We must find a way to replace the necklace."
The next day they took the box the necklace had come in and went to the jeweller whose name was inside. He checked his records.
"I did not sell this necklace, madame. I only supplied the box."
So they went from jeweller to jeweller, looking for a necklace like the other one, trying to remember exactly what it looked like, both of them sick with sorrow and worry.
In a shop at the Palais-Royal they found a string of diamonds that seemed exactly like the one they were looking for. It cost forty thousand francs. The jeweller would let them have it for thirty-six thousand.
They asked him not to sell it for three days. And they made an agreement that he would take it back for thirty-four thousand francs if the first necklace was found before the end of February.
> **Jeweller's Terms — Palais-Royal**
> Goods · A string of diamonds, seemingly identical to the lost one
> Marked price · Forty thousand francs
> Held for · Three days
> Buy-back · Thirty-four thousand francs, if the first necklace is found before the end of February
Loisel had eighteen thousand francs that his father had left him. He would borrow the rest.
And he borrowed. He asked one man for a thousand francs and another for five hundred. He took five gold coins from one lender and three from the next. He signed papers, made ruinous promises, dealt with money lenders and every kind of person who lends at high interest. He risked the whole rest of his life. He signed his name without even knowing whether he could pay. He was terrified by the worries ahead, by the black poverty coming for him, by the thought of every physical hardship and every mental torture. Still he went to get the new necklace and put thirty-six thousand francs on the shop counter.

When Madame Loisel brought the necklace back, Madame Forestier said in a hurt voice:
"You should have returned it sooner. I might have needed it."
She did not open the box, which was what her friend was afraid of. If she had noticed the change, what would she have thought? What would she have said? Would she not have taken her for a thief?
