Kamala did not have long, and she knew it.

"Listen to me," she said, her voice growing weak. She looked from Siddhartha to the boy in the doorway, and back again. "This is your son. His name is Siddhartha, like yours. I never told you. I found out you were the father only after you had gone."

Siddhartha looked at the boy — his boy — and something moved in him that he had never felt before. The child stared back with frightened, hostile eyes, understanding nothing, only that his mother was dying and this ragged stranger was somehow part of it.

"I am glad," Kamala whispered. "I was going to the Buddha to find peace before I died. And here, at the end of the road, I have found it instead in your face." She held Siddhartha's hand tightly. "Stay near the river. It is a good place." Then her hand loosened, her breathing stopped, and she was gone.

Siddhartha sat with her a long time and did not weep. He felt her death, and her life, and the strange gift of the son she had left him, all at once — like the river holding many waters in a single stream.

They buried Kamala on the hill above the river. Vasudeva built the fire, and Siddhartha stood beside his son and tried, gently, to lay a hand on the boy's shoulder.

The boy pulled away from him.

He was a child of the city — of soft beds and servants and sweet food. He did not know this thin, quiet man who called himself his father. He did not want to know him. He did not want the hut, or the river, or the plain food, or any of it.

The boy looked at his new home with hatred in his eyes.
